Thanksgiving

Thanksgiving in Canada is on Monday and I'm worried about eating too much during dinner. How do you guys keep your eating under control on holidays?

mashed potatoes and pies and warm bread and stuffing and pies and pies and yummy...

if you are making it, you could make lighter versions of the food.
if its at someone elses house, you could bring something thats healthy, then you know at least 1 thing is ok. try to think of the heavier items as just getting a taste maybe. decide which ones are your most fav. worth it.

after maybe you could go for a walk, or in my family, i would help clean up in kitchen.

some people say it helps to eat a snack before you go.

For me it is easier if we are eating at someone's house which we do every year. Then I can just take a small taste of everything, They always start with soup and that sort of fills me up. It is also easier to not take seconds or start just tasting things in the kitchen. I admit I always have one small piece of just about every dessert offered. Then we also have no leftovers lying around which is fine with me. So I don't know what your holiday plans are but just try your best, relax and enjoy. If worse comes to worst take an enzyme after dinner. They work wonders for digestion. Remember it is only ONE day and you can always clean up your act on Friday and get back on track.

Happy Thanksgiving. I always remind myself that there will be plenty of leftovers. That keeps me from eating too much, but I still eat quite a bit.

Happy Thanksgiving!
The beauty of being a regular exerciser is these times of huge food get togethers will not hurt you really!
I'm the host this year and cooking both a turkey & pork roast. But what I do is I just allow myself everything I make, including the sweets. But all portion control. One day will not hurt you. The sweet potatoes are delicious done just with garlic & onions roasted. If you are a guest then again portion control. You could even drink some water before meal time to help with feeling famished. Funny we always feel famished when looking at a holiday meal. ENJOY your day with your family.

Tday is at my house every year, honestly when I cook I don't feel like eating as much, but in general I don't bother restricting my food on holidays, I agree with the others, one day is not going to hurt me, and I think it's good to have a high calorie day once in a while.

Enjoy the day!

Happy Thanksgiving!

I eat really good most of the year. I only allow myself 1 cheat meal or snack a week. So on holidays and my birthday I allow myself a whole cheat day. I usually will workout on holidays anyway so I figure it's not that big of a deal. Also, after a day of stuffing myself I'm ready to get back to eating right.

You get to control what you eat- you get to decide what you are willing to eat and what you are willing to work off. There's nothing to worry about. If you eat more than you had intended, it is a decision that you made, not something forced upon you. It's kinda cool- there are so many things out of our hands, but what we eat, in this prosperous continent with its abundance of food, is up to us. Of course, anorexics take this a bit too far...

ITA!

You can take the focus off of food, and just enjoy the company.

Decide beforehand if you are going to indulge, and decide what you are going to indulge in.

You can take a dish to share, and make sure it's something that is healthy.

You can decide to have 'a little bit' of several things, and eat lightlly earlier in the day and the next day.

A once-in-a-while 'splurge' isn't going to throw off your entire diet.

What a nice perspective!

Thanks for the great advice. :D

I've decided to bring some dishes, eat what I enjoy and not freak out on the calorie count since there's no way I can keep my calories low with pie around.

You guys are right...one meal or even day isn't going to undo all the work we do.

I agree- it's ONE day! I kick off Thanksgiving with a really hard workout to ease any guilt that might possibly try to sneak in on this food infested day!! And like the others, I take a small-ish amount of most foods!

Happy Thanksgiving and may you and your family enjoy the day!

I don't restrict myslef on holidays either, I'm not eating all day long and it is only once a year.

I'd say to anyone during the holidays to treat yourself :)

Delish! Thanksgiving dinner was SO worth the calorie splurge.

I prepared roasted root vegetables and a huge veggies tray so I filled up on veggies but did enjoy some treats also.

Just want to brag because my homemade chocolate cake (thanks smittenkitchen.com) and my date squares (thanks grandma) were a hit with my family.

HAPPY THANKSGIVING!

It really isn't that hard for me to not eat a lot on holidays, but it is a holiday and one day of eating like you don't care is not going to kill you or your figure.
