terminology dictionary ?

Dear Cathe, and All,

I am new to the forum, I am from the UK, and I don't own a Cathe video yet (I will though, before Christmas !). I have been avidly reading through the forum, and have picked up lots of tips, and info, but I keep getting stuck on words, and phrases I have never heard before, such as planks, tape rotation, 165#, plyo's, etc. So, I was wondering what everyone thinks of adding an exercise terminology dictionary to the forum, so that if we can look up words to help us understand what they mean.

It is just an idea ?

What does everyone think ?

Anna

Hi, Anna! I think what you're suggesting is a "Cathe-Speak" section! One of the continual frustrations of the fitness industry is that there are usually 10 names for each movement, practice and technique. I think this forum has developed a few of its own!

"Tape rotation": a series of pre-planned workouts, usually spanning several weeks, spefically arranged to produce a training or aesthetic effect

"Plyo": short for "plyometric"; a jump-based method of training that recruits the thighs for explosive power (usually at a slower pace to minimize the contribution of the calves and feet)

"Planks": a method of training the trunk or "core" muscles by holding the body perfectly straight in a face-down push-up position or in a face-UP "push-up" position

Any others you're curious about?

Hi Annette,

Thanks for your explanations, the only other one I got really stuck on was ROFLMBO (not exercise related, but it stumped me!) I have since worked that one out, I think it means,

'Rolling On Floor Laughing My Butt Off !!!!!!!!'

Is another word for plyo, 'repulsions', or something similar ? Where, instead of step touch on the bench, you power move and jump, and then step back on the floor ? Sorry, if I am not making much sense.

One that I am curious about, is step taps ? Why is it alot of instructors don't like them ? or try and avoid putting them in their videos ?

many thanks
Anna

Hi, Anna!

A good way to get a feel for what the semi-word "plyo" means is to get Interval Max, where plyo intervals rule. For instance, instead of doing a standard jumping jack with footstrikes on each beat and long legs, you squat down with the legs wide, then forcefully propel up bringing legs together landing in a bent knee position, and all of this is half time. All of this is also, I might add, unbelievably challenging. Same with what Cathe calls "power scissors", which is simply a half-time lunge on the floor, where you propel up from a bent-knee position, scissor your legs and land again in a bent knee position, also half time and also torture. It's the slow jumping that's the key and it's slow to take momentum out of the equation.

With step-taps, you step backward off the step with one foot, tap the floor with the other foot, and then step back onto the bench with the OTHER foot. I have no idea why a lot of instructors don't like them; possibly they don't know how to cue it well and their participants trip. There's a whole big magilla in step instructor circles about "tapless" choreography, which is another reason why I only instruct aqua rather than step!

Hope this helps

I am from UK too.

Hello Anna,

I am from the UK too. Where do you live? I live and work in London.

Did you try out the Energy Sprint yesterday?

I forgot the post where we started our chats on - I wanted to see if you have posted anything new.

RE: I am from UK too.

Hi Yen,
I live in Nottingham, my parents live in Liverpool, and actually my brother lives in Walthamstowe.
I did try out Energy sprint yesterday, and I really enjoyed it. I made it through to the end too, though I wasn't sweating as much as I would of liked, but I think that is because I was kind of learning the moves. I think I will do it again tonight and give it some welly ! My DH might have to peel me off the carpet !
I did feel like a bit of an 'extra' from 'FAME' with all the graceful moves and pointing of toes ! I also did a lot of yelling at the TV when i was trying to follow them ! I can't wait for my Cathe videos to arrive now, i have ordered Mega Step Blast, and the Wedding video, to ease myself in gradually !
Are you looking forward to the weekend ? Anything nice planned ?

Anna

RE: I am from UK too.

I might go out to an exhibition this weekend. My weekends are not full as I like to laze around the house. I did the Nike 10k run last Sunday and that was a blast! I met another girl on the way there and she was tiny, but she was bloody fast (I couldn't help thinking 'bitch!' enviously).

I think you can do Cathe's weight training - just don't start so heavy. If you want advice on where to buy a good set of weights go to Argos. I bought all my weights from Argos: a 50k set of barbell and dumbell and an another set of dumbell (20k). With the barbell and dumbells you have lots of weight variations and all you need is to buy extra bars. I just bought extra dumbell handles from Index catalogue (they don't have it in Argos for some reason) for £8-£9 and I would like a bicep curl bar eventually.

Argos also have Reebok step, mats, stability balls and some good thing, but I have the proper health club one as I double it up as a weight bench. That is all the equipment you need for the home.

Thanks Yen,

I shall check out Argos/Index, I never gave them a thought for exercise equipment ?
I saw your post about the NIKE race, well done, I think it is fantastic that you run. How do you cope with running in the Winter with all the dark nights, etc ?

RE: I am from UK too.

Actually, I have to stop in the winter and run on weekends during the day or not bother at all if it's too cold. I am not a runner exactly, I tried to start last year and then stopped because my legs hurt. This summer I started again after I started working out with Cathe tapes and explored this forum and read that Cathe runs a lot, I thought I'll copy her.

I did it in over an hour, far too long if you ask me, but there were so many people there that you can't run normally. It was the hardest running I have done so far, because when I run on my own I take it easy. My right knee is a little painful because of it, but I hope that is just a beginner's unskilled body rather than medical problem.

I am going to try and keep running this winter while it's still light in the evening and at weekends. Or I might just join a gym for a few months and use the treadmill. I will also do more work outs at home - increase the weights to 3 days a week and stepping the rest. Then get out again when summer comes. Good plan don't you think? :)

I have to tell you running is much harder than stepping and if you can do it, try it. Take it slowly though and you will be fine (not like me who ploughed head first into it and then had to stop). I can give you some training tips if you like.

BTW. In case you are wondering how I can spend so much time on Cathe.com? I have a boring job and no responsibilities at work and access to the internet, so I just chat all day long. (Hell, if they want to pay me to do nothing then I am not complaining. And I am learning a lot about fitness and exercise that I might just change careers) :).

RE: I am from UK too.

Hi Yen,

I am a full time Mum, so I am at home a lot anyway. Though, I have a busy day today, two friends are having French Manicures today, and there is a Parents afternoon at my daughters school, too. So I am busy busy, and god do I ache after Energy Sprint :)

RE: I am from UK too.

What weights did you use for Energy Sprint? I started with 3kg dumbells. I would say if you do this tape 3 times a week, plus some other beginners weight tape then after that time you can start Cathe.

I have Cindy Crawford, Cher, Jane Fonda, Callenetics but all these are beginners and you grow out of them quickly.
