Tell me if this annoys you as much as it does me

LOL Lunacat!!! That is hilarious!
People tell me I look good for having six kids. What am I SUPPOSED to look like??? What is the stereotype of someone who has six children? Three hundred pounds??? I guess I just don't get it. I want to look fabulous and fit though, so I am still a work in progress!

When I used to go to the gym to exercise, I'd always where headphones. That way nobody bugged me. I was very antisocial.:)

I am so with Donna. I learned pretty quickly to use the headphones. They never really had to be turned on. Funny. Second, that's why I now work out of home. While it's nice to get a few honest comments, I'd rather just not deal with all the others. It's just not worth it to me.

I have enjoyed reading this thread and I had to tell my story after reading all of yours. I work out at our local Y three mornings a week (week days) and there are never very many people at the gym during the mid morning hours. But, the majority of those who are at the gym are all retirees so it actually is a very pleasant atmosphere because the men aren't hitting on you and the women don't feel threatened by you. I have started wearing longer shorts because I am more self conscious given the age group I am around. Mind you, I don't wear the really short shorts but I have switched to 5" inseams so they are just above my knees!

My H told me he will draw the line at seeing me on the walking track with my purse on my arm! :p

Your stories cracked me up. I work out at a very large gym. Lots of interesting people to say the least :) I really don't get too annoyed anymore. I just pretty much zone out the minute I walk in the dcoor. I chat w/my friends, smile at folks who will smile at me (or even if they don't), put on my ipod and go about my business.

The only lady who really bugs me at the gym is this grumpy lady who always takes the best sitting bench (the one w/the long back on it and is just a seat). She does a set, sets her towel on the seat and then goes and gets a drink and literally walks around for 5+ minutes. If you take her chair while she is gone she gets totally mad. I don't even know what to say to her. Usually I just smile at her and go on to something else.

Guess that is why I am glad I have Cathe and my other favorite home workouts. I really enjoy working out at home. I guess it makes me more tolerant when I do go the gym which is usually only about 2-3 days a week :)

That is why Cathe is my ONLY trainer!

My dh is VERY out of shape and overweight, yet 'because he played football' he is able to tell me all about fitness and form and weight training!;-)

I have been running for 8 years and weight lifting for 17 years. But he knows everything......... :+

What a great thread!

My husband loves to give advice and lots of it when I'm working out-- I've starting locking the door to keep him out of the room. . . He's trying to be helpful (he's a PT), but it drives me nuts! He'd have me lifting no more than 5 pounds out of fear of injury if I let him:)

RIGHT ON LADIES!! :) I especially the comment on people who do 20 minutes on the treadmill 3 times a week and that's vigorous cardio. I suppose for some it is, but it's just not enough for me!

I hate it when a friend of mine, who's a gym member and who spends maybe 20 minutes on the eliptical, READING A MAGAZINE AT THE SAME TIME no less, 3 times a week max, tells ME that I'm getting an inferior workout because I'm at home doing maybe MIS, Taebo or P90X, etc, for over an hour 5-6 days a week!

I'm lifting heavy weights, or punching a heavy bag, sweating like a pig and she's barely breaking a sweat while she reads "Vogue" or watches a soap on the old machines.

I smile and flex a little as I point out to her the great strides I've made on my own, with NO PT, and NO gym machines, just a lotta blood, sweat and tears as I talk about buying SMALLER clothes sizes while she can barely fit into what she has now.

Revenge is sweet. }(

This is a good thread. The most annoying comment I've had is from my brother-in-law. He and my sister are quite competitive and we don't happen to see each other very often. We got together about a year and a half ago after not seeing each other for about 8 months. I had been working out and watching my food intake for about 5 months at the time and had lost a clothing size. She noticed and complimented me and asked me what I was doing. (Firming at the time) About 3 months later I saw her again and she had joined Curves (right after she saw me!) She was looking good and I complimented her. My brother-in-law asked me about my workout videos (I had moved on to Cathe's) and said, "What are they, about 15 minutes or so?". Well NOOOO, they are at least 30 min. with many over an hour long. I proceded to tell him that if I do a 30 min workout, I usually do two of them to get a good workout in. He kind of just shut up. But what a classic example of someone who discounts the effectiveness of home video workouts. Sorry this was so long, but he really pushed my buttons that day and this gave me a chance to vent!

I have to say this is a great thread .. Also I have NEVER been to a gym ..You could never get me to go either . I Love the privacy of my little home .:) :) :)

lol!!!! Limecat! what really annoys me is when people who are supposed to be working out are really just sitting on the equipment having a nice long conversation.

have a healthy day!

i recently lost 35# and a lot of people have asked me how i did it. the minute i start to tell them about my diet and workout schedule i can see their eyes glaze over and the nod of their heads and in the end they say 'i'm going to have to get in shape one these days, maybe i'll try that.' yea, right! the next day i see them with donuts and foot long subs for lunch. one of these days!

Here's a good one for you. I lost a large amount of weight just before I came here to Boston. I did it mostly with cardio tapes at home (Step aerobics) but nothing fun. Well, when I moved here, joined a new gym and at some point, hired this trainer guy to help me build a gym routine w/free weights and machines. He spent two weeks with me to build a new routine, etc. and he then said "okay, call me when you need to up your weights, want variety, to check in, etc." I thought that was really fair of him b/c when I told him that I didn't have the funds to have him every day, he accepted that. I did his routine but I was so weak taht there were certain parts that I didn't like to do (IE I could not even bench press the BAR without a struggle- 25 pounds!) Just a few months later, I bought my first Firm tape and then quickly got the other two Beginner tapes. Little by little, I built up to more difficult Firm tapes but I always keep my gym membership to supplement my home workouts. I saw changes in my body and felt great. Well, one day I saw my trainer, whom I adored. He stoped me to tell me that I looked incredible! What are you doing? I haven't seen you but you obviously are working really hard! You must have joined a gym closer to school? I explained the tapes I was using and my new found program and he just sort of curled his nose and insisted that this was not possible. huh!?

Videos are great for me b/c of my schedule. I cannot really run on someone else's schedule at the gym for classes (although I try to make a certain one at least once a week if I am not on a strict rotation that doesn't allow it) and I really enjoy the workotus that I have for home use. They yield the results, are fun and I can do them whenever I want, without interference, etc. I still have my gym membership for cross training, classes, etc., but I won't give up either method any time soon!

I do some abs training at the small gym where I am interning prior to taking my personal trainer exam. All the women ask me how I got my abs so flat. So, I pull up my shirt and lower my shorts just enough to show them my c-section "pouch" and the elephant skin that surrounds it, despite my many years of doing abs. The point of all this is that none of us have perfect bodies, we have to be a peace with what we have. If we aren't for whatever reason, the do something about it!! There are so many people looking for a magic bullet so they don't have to change their unhealthy lifestyles. It just doesn't exist (and believe me, I spent a lot of time looking for it)

"Don't forget to breathe!"

>You ladies are SO funny!

>I've had people tell me I look good and I'm skinny enough
>(well, that was 10 lbs ago). This usually from people who are
>obviously overweight. My husband likes to correct my form or
>tell me that the workout I'm doing is doing nothing for me.
>Oh, this ticks me off! But, he works out and looks mighty
>fine, so I can't think of a good comeback. Anyone got one for

Remind your hubby what you'd be like without your daily endorphine rush!! }(

And who cares what it does for the outside? What does exercise and a healthy lifestyle do for your insides?? Endorphine rush aside! :p Better skin, good heart, strong bones, able to carry in all the grocery bags at once by lining them up on your arms.... I wouldn't stop exercising for anything.

What I truly hate is when people tell me I don't need to lose weight or exercise or watch what I eat. How do they think I stay this way? Healthy lifestyle equals healthy body, and considering I have high cholesterol by genetics, it's in my best interests to maintain this healthy lifestyle. But dealing with dense people sure does get frustrating. Maximus, I feel your pain!!

When I read the original post, I got to laughing and laughing hard. My husband is in a band and has long hair and many many many men come up to him and tell him that they, too, once had hair that long. :+ That tickled my funnybones.

Ha.. I use to always laugh.. how women had to be in shape before they went to the gym. My guy friends could never understand how I said.. na... I can't go to the gym until I'm in good shape.. and how judgemental women were of others that weren't in shape but went to gym...

Fortunately I've outgrown all that.. and now it's like more power to them going... Sad some of these women traits we have to get rid of....

Remember that just because people are "large" or appear out of shape does not mean they don't know anything about fitness or cannot give advice. It just simply means that they obviously do not practice what they preach. They should also admit so.

Just getting that in.:)
