Target Heart Rate

Ok so I have done some research and I am getting confused. I am trying to find out what my target heart rate is. I have figured out what my max HR is by taking 220-my age.

Here is where I am getting confused. Some websites say your target heart rate is inbetween 50-75%, some say 60-80%, and some say 65-85%, so which is it?

I have asked for a heart rate monitor of christmas and I want to start getting serious about watching my heart rate. I understand I want to train in the zone of my target heart rate, and at times hit my max HR, but not to exceed my max HR, but what is the percentage for target heart rate?

Hi - I won't be much help to answer your question entirely - I can't remember the forumla or desired percentages. However, if you are concerned about maintaining your target heart rate while using the monitor, the watch will set it for you based on the informaiton (age etc) you provide it before you work out. Mine flashes when my heart rate is over or under the target heart rate that I have set. My polar watch gives 2-3 options for target heart rate zones and I can select which I prefer based on my fitness goal at the time. It's not something that I have to set each time I use it - just change it when necessary. I hope that helps?

I went to the Polar website (company that sells heartrate monitors) and this is the info I got. Max HR is 220 - your age, 60-70% of your max HR for weight loss, 70% or your max HR for weight management and to improve cardio fitness and 80% + of your max HR for interval workouts.
Hope this helps.
