Tanning bed at home

Hi Everyone! Curious as to whether anyone has a home tanning bed. I know they are not that safe but I guess I am just curious since self tanners are so hard to use on those hard to get to areas, such as the back. I think a tan really accentuates the muscles we are diligently developing. ;-)

In my opinion it is contradictory to your healthy fitness habits to deliberately put yourself at risk in one of those beds. Aren't you working out to be fitter and healthier? That tan may accentuate your muscles right now but how do you think it will look when you have scabs and scars on your skin from cancer and removal surgeries?

Ok, I'm OFF my soapbox now! I just had to add my 2 (or maybe even 1) cents. :)

But I will add this... DON'T DO IT!

I agree with lizzie. Melonoma DOES happen. I have had melomoma and if it was not caught early and operated on I would be DEAD right now, no I'm not being dramatic melomoma kills. I was 29 years old and pregnant when diagnosed. SCARY!!!!!! I have this HUGE nasty scar on my thigh as a permanent reminder to avoid sunbathing and always use sunscreen. In fact I was just at the dermatologist this morning for my annual skin check and she reminded me about how important it is to wear sunscreen and avoid unnecceary exposure.

Personally when I see someone really tan I don't think its an attractive look. All I see is someone who will be wrinkly before their time and putting their health at risk for cancer.

I use to sunbath before I met my husband at age 24. My DH (he is a Dr.) convinced me to stop sunbathing but it was too late because the damage was already done. you may think you are fine now but it takes years for the damage to show up. The surgeon explained to me that the melomoma was probably from sun damage when I was a child.

PLEASE DON'T DO IT!!! Its just not worth it. Just like some people take ephedra for weight loss and it can kill you. UV ray exposure can kill you also.

I feel really passionate about this because I would not be here today if it was not caught early. I credit my husband for noticing the mole on my thigh when we were sitting at a red light I happened to be wearing shorts and he spotted it.

I agree with the others, tanning is NOT a good idea! I'm 24 and went through a phase where I just wanted to be tan (I'm fair-skinned) since it looks better. So I went to Hollywood Tans a few times. I didn't even get that tan. When I think about it, I realize I was so dumb! I worry about the wrinkes and the sun spots I will get. Even worse, cancer that could've been prevented! A bunch of tans can literally ruin your skin and/or health. Trust me, my mom's a nurse at a dermatologist and tells me stories, tanning is so NOT worth it! You'll pay for it in the end.

As for alternatives, I like self-tanners. They can be a pain and a hassle at first, but practice makes perfect. Practice now when it's cold outside. It's a small price to pay. Now, whenever I see tanned girls, I do get a twinge of jealousy, but I think of how they're ruining their skin/health just for vanity.

I agree that safeguarding your health is important.

But just like upright rows, tanning isn't all bad all the time for all people. Some Vitamin D from the sun is good for you.

Tanning bed at home? If you have that much extra space I would rather put something else there-- LOL- like a treadmill! but maybe someone here does have a tanning bed.

You don't have to use it all the time.

I prefer good ol' Sol for a tan (only in the summer) and have found Neutrogena mousse self tanner with bronzing stuff in it to really fill in well for this time of year.

Hi All,

In the UK, it is recommended that you have a maximum of 10 sunbed sessions per year. IMO (and this is just my opinion, so don't pelt me with bricks !), I think they are lethal weapons, and get abused alot, and not only is there the skin cancer risk, there is also the ageing factor - the skin texture can be come quite leathery, which is not attractive, in my way of thinking.

With the amount of good self tan creams on the market now, there is no real need to lie on a sunbed, so get self tanning !!!!!!!

THINK OF YOUR FINE LINES AND WRINKLES !!!!!!!

I agree with all the other ladies, tanning just isn't smart. I think the sun is healthy for a person in small doses but a tanning bed is just pure vanity and only hurts you! This is just my opinion but I'm sure many would agree that a tan does not make you necessarily more attractive and can often times appear "trashy". If you have nice skin, clear, soft, and smooth I think it can look very pretty no matter what the color.

Oh Anna, this made me laugh. Not because it's funny but because I remember how dark it is in England for so much of the year. I loved the summers--light until 8:30 PM, 9 sometimes later & then the sun is up around 5 AM. I miss those days!!!

I'd just like to add that the sunless tanning creams are really very good. I've used the Mario Badescu brand and I've heard the Estee Lauder makes a good one. If you like the look of a tan, why not try one of these products? Just a suggestion, take it or leave it, right?

Tanning beds are soo expensive!
Don't kill me, but honestly, I occasionally go to the tanning salon. I am not a freak about it, I just go every once and a while. While this is a secondary plus, I think that it clears up my acne if I go every once and a while, this may be an unfounded notion, but honestly, it just goes away, probably because it dries up the oil in my face..

I wouldn't get one at home though. Just the temptation seeing it there everyday, would get me in there all the time! I had a co worker at my work get BANNED from the tanning salon b/c she was driving to other tanning salons on the same day to get more tan, isn't that crazy?

I agree they are bad for you, I wish I could find a good face self tanner that didn't make me break out though!

Jaime:

The Mario Badescu didn't make me break out, and I break out from everything! Call and talk to them, they're so helpful.
