Luv-my-labs--I also made this mistake a few months ago. I was *certain* the woman was pregnant, but it turned out she wasn't. Like you said, I wanted the ground to open up and swallow me.
MCunningham and anyone else--you may not even need to try to embarrass a person who makes this mistake. When I thought someone was pregnant and she said she wasn't, that's all it took to mortify me! I never want to make anybody feel bad!
