i recently read that swimming is for having a lean body. does that meen i should not swim on the same day or day after of doing weights? i plan on doing p90x classic rotation next week and dont want to have to stop swimming for 13 weeks!

Hello Laura,

I think swimming is considered a cardio workout more than strength, but it will build your upper body if you do it hard enough. But generally, it increases the heart rate and therefore cardio.

I have combined weight training with swimming in the past. I would do one day swim and one day weight training. I have also read of some people combining swimming and weight training on the same day, but it didn't say what body they worked on. I couldn't do this because I didn't have enough time in the day to go from the pool to weight training at home.

Maybe you should give it a try and see how your body copes? I would probably not do a heavy upper body workout following a swim though, legs is probably better.

There's not much that is right or wrong in training terms, only what does or doesn't work for you.

Hi Laura-

I swim sometimes for my cardio and do weights on the same day.(Usally its weights first and then swim)

You will find what works best for you, but normally when I do both in the same day, I pair my swim w/a lower body strength day if I can. If I can't, my second choice would be the day I was scheduled to work my chest.

I found that working my back or shoulders on the same day I was swimming was just too much for those particular bodyparts.

Take care, Lynn M.

seems like i am going to have to reduce my swimming if i do p90x. on the days i dont do upper swim hour after lunch, then cardio hr after dinner. so i will get to swim 3-4x a week. if i do cardio with light upper/lower swim on same day.thanks for your help

I agree that I think it depends on how hard you swim. I find it to be more of a cardio workout. I usually do it on the same day I weight train(weights first). I've never felt like it was too much for my upper(or lower) body. Maybe I'm not swimming hard enough:)

i was wondering the same thing. i used to swim with weighted webbed gloves and loved it, now i'm afraid to use the gloves in case i ruin my weight training. maybe i should do it on the same day as upper body only. it's a great cardio workout, just hate the chlorine.
