Sushi virgin no more! :)

Hi folks -- I am 36 years old and I have never eaten sushi -- until today, that is. I've always wanted to try it, the idea that it's raw fish never really bothered me. But I've been with someone for years who didn't like seafood of any kind (so I never got to go out for good ol' fish & chips!) and even though I left him a year ago, I still had not indulged. My 5 year old's diet consists of Happy Meals and grilled cheese, so that was another obstacle. Well, finally, we went into Trader Joe's and I got my usual Greek yogurt and portabella mushroom pizza (yum) and I took a look at the sushi display. I took a shrimp and California roll combo and we went home. Megan had her cheese pizza for dinner and I had a couple rolls with some couscous salad (also from Trader Joe's). Yay!
Now I'm starting to think of other food items I've never tried that I should try. I've been pretty vanilla when it somes to food all my life. Nothing too spicy or salty or weird... I have had Kashi cereal with Greek yogurt nearly every day for 4 years. I need to learn to cook -- really cook.

Woohoo! I LOVE sushi!!!! Love it. Japanese food is one of my all time favorites. Just wait till you try "Real" sushi from a restaurant.

I Love Sushi too!....Charlene, try "Yellowtail" when you venture out to a Sushi Bar. If you were to close your eyes and eat yellowtail......you'd never know you were eating raw fish......it's delicious!

I work in a Steak and Seafood Restaurant and the most popular thing on the menu is "Ahi" (Tuna from Hawaii) It's yummy too! and of course don't forget the washabi and soy!

Ooooo! Ditto!

Congratulations on trying something new! You'll be surprised how many new foods you'll want to try now that you've tried your first!

I love all kinds of different foods!

I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE sushi! Definitely go to a good Japanese restaurant and try some other stuff. It's addicting!

One word of advice the light green stuff that comes with the sushi is so NOT avocado!! PROCEED WITH CAUTION, . .unless you want your nose hairs to burn. My husband and his family hate trying different foods. It was so strange dating him because he was not used to all the different types of food that I love. I grew up on Guam and in San Francisco so I'm all about trying different foods from different cultures and accepting the fact that what is strange to us is normal to others.

Wish I'd gotten that word of caution about the "green stuff" when I got my first sushi!! I have low tolerance for spicy stuff, and yup - thought it was avacado. WOW!!!

Did you go to the 2008 RT?? Someone at our table at lunch told a story about eating a whole serving of wasabi at once because they thought it was avocado! Was that you, Janie? My head feels like exploding just thinking of it, and I love, love, love wasabi!

ETA...or was it you jcm?

No was not me. :) I wish I could go to the RT. I never ate a whole serving of wasabi before BUT a lot of my sushi virgin friends, . . including my husband have. :) I always felt so bad but was laughing on the inside, . .they wold get so mad at me and say "Why didn't you warn me?" That Japanese wasabi is so misleading, . . .it looks so bright and tastey but it packs a punch.

Sorry - wasn't me either. I'm quite glad there was no one to see the look on my face. Yikes.
