Supplements

I don't take fat burners, I really think that in the long run they are horrible for you and ruin your metabolism. As for protein powders, I absolutely love Labrada prov60. The vanilla one tastes so good! I make a shake with bananas and strawberries, it comes out really good. It doesn't have that strong chalky taste like the others do, and it has more protein than the others. I don't know how the chocolate, strawberry or banana ones taste. I just stick with the vanilla.

I agree with Barbara about fat burners. They're just a way for pharmaceutical companies to make money off of people as well. Weight 'burned off' through your own efforts is not only healthier, but will tend to stay off.

As for protein powders, I primarily use hemp protein powder (either just ground hemp, or hemp with theh oil removed). I will also sometimes use a yellow pea protein powder. I mix them in a morning smoothie or post-workout smoothie, thout lately, I've just been using Vega meal replacment, which is mostly hemp, with maca, flax and chlorella as other protein sources.

Some protein powders are not much more than a bunch of artificial chemicals with protein added, or isolated protein, and I personally feel they are inferior to food-based protein powders.

Thank you katherine:)
I just heard from someone that these women fitness competitors defenetly take some kind of fat burner to look like they do. I'm down to 18% body fat but they are lower than that. Is that possible for a women?
Thank you

No, don't take fat burners, don't believe in them. Occasionally I do protein shakes, but they CAN be really high in calories if you aren't careful. I like APEX vanilla. It tastes the best. You can buy it at any gym.

Fitness competitors are really not good role models, IMO, because 1) they are not in competition shape all year round; 2) they may resort to extreme measures to look that way (including taking diuretics to reduce water retention, not eating carbs on the day before and day of the competition. I've heard it said about bodybuilders that the day of the competition, they may look their strongest, but they are actually at their weakest because of this).

I always remember Rachel McLish (one of my fitness role models from the 80's) as being 18% body fat off season, and 12% on season. While it's possible for some women to get below 18% body fat, if you can't do it naturally and healthfully, without the fat burners, I'd say find another goal. It's not just about LOOKING good, it's about being healthy and having a long and fit life.

Hi Randi,

I don't take fat burners, I am too concerned about possible side effects. I do replace some meals with protein shakes though. I have tried a lot of different one, most of them taste aweful, like a chemical factory, uuugggghhh.

I like Jay Robb protein powders, he has different flavors and kinds. You can buy it at Whole Foods, I buy it at the Vitamin Shoppe around the corner, they are by far the cheapest. You can order online through www.vitaminshoppe.com.

Take care,

Carola

My body fat is lower than 18% and I do not take fat burners. The fitness competitors take them for energy as competition nears. They need the caffeine jolt to get out of bed since they deprive themselves of things the body needs for survivial...like carbs (needed for brain function) and water. Keep in mind, those women do not look like that year round. They have a season, they eat meat and veggies all day, 2 cardio sessions a day, and supplements for energy and income.

Fat burners don't work. If they did, the world would be thin!

As for protein powders, I like Carb Solutions but only use it when 'real protein' is not available. I do mix it with my Gatorade at a 4:1.

I actually love taking vitamins and supplements. We all know we can't eat enough food to get all the nutrients are bodies need. Now I do take high quality vitamins that cost a lot, but I feel my body is worth it, and I feel and look great. For protein I take Catalst. Which is made by Advocare. Yes I'm an Advocare kind of girl. I love it. All it is, is a supplement that provides a blend of the essential amino acids your body needs for muscle-building. Catalyst helps reduce fat and retain muscle(when dieting), and leaves your body more toned and better defined. I tried whey protein in the past. And it didn't work for me like this. My muscles are sculpted and feel more solid than ever.

It sounds like it's sort of unhealthy to be a fitness competitor. I have taken Hydroxycut a long time ago with ephedra I was a nervous reck all the time and grouchy:(. I was just curious if there was any that works without the side effects! My idol is monica brant so i've always thought that she has to be taking somthing to look the way she does or maybe she just has really good genetics.

I take the green source vitamins that puritan pride has. I also drink probolic sr protein mix I get at GNC. My body fat is between 12-14% and I eat very clean and I eat alot (mostly earlier in the day and then my last meal is meat and a green veggie)
