Suffering from Cathe withdrawals

Cathlete
Hi all,

I'm an avid Cathe fan and have been using her tapes and dvd's now for 6 or 7 years. However, I am a newbee to the forums. I just had surgery on my foot last week and can't workout for 10-16 weeks. I did my last workout tape on December 1st, the day of my surgery. I worked out 14 days straight since I knew there was a long break coming for me. Since my surgery, I have done ctx upper, and pyramid upper body-except for the planks on the ball-can't do those with my foot in soft cast. Also using the new ab dvd every other day or so.

I recently lost 30lbs on weight watchers, and cathe workouts and don't want to re-gain it.

Does anyone have any suggestions for me. Is doing upper body weights 3x per week adequate? Hopefully, in about 8 weeks I can wear a regular shoe and can do some leg weight training. Until then I'm awaiting by bb dvd's and missing doing IMAX2-one of my favorite cardio workouts.

Thanks:)

I feel wierd saying welcome because you have been a Cathe fan and user for much longer than me (I just found her this past Spring), but welcome!!

Hope you are doing well recovering from your surgery. I personally think what you're doing, workout wise, sounds wonderful. I would only suggest to listen to your upper body especially and skip a day if you need to. While it seems like plenty of rest between workouts, just be attentive to what your body wants from you:) . I wouldn't recommend doing any more upper weight training than what you have listed.

I imagine your frustration over not being able to do lower body workouts. I had both knees operated on several years ago and the weeks of no impact, crutches, etc. got pretty old really fast. But you have to let your body heal so it can get back to kicking butt! Be sure to check with your doctor before doing any lower body stuff, just to be safe!

This was probably not much help. Just wanted to say hi and that I think you're doing a super job!

Hi, first of all welcome to our little family! Sorry to hear about your surgery. I can relate - totally! I also recently underwent knee surgery and I've started out very slowly. I have been doing the upper pyramids, ctx upper and doing mat pilates because like you, I was going through major Cathe withdrawal, among other feelings. I agree that you should not over do your upper body workouts. Listen to your body. I'm finding that since I've gone back to my workouts in moderation, that feeling of being "pumped" is quickly coming back and I'm starting to feel good again. Many on this forum know of my frustrations with the problems I've had with my knee, but you know - they were all right on advising and listened to my venting. So I say to you - if it feels right and doesn't cause any undue pain, by all means workout! Enjoy it - I 'm so glad I listened to all my Catheite friends!! Hope this helps!!

Take care - and please let us know how you're doing.

How about trying some "upper body cardio?" You could sit on a stability ball, with your casted leg out in front, to add a balance challenge, and to also give you some more movement possibility than just sitting on a chair. Then do the upper body punching combos in Cardio Kicks or KPC.

You guys are full of great suggestions. I hadn't though of trying cardio on the ball. But since I have cardio kicks, that may work out well for me, even if I just start out using the last segment of the tape with the punching drills-just to make sure I can keep my balance okay.

I see the Dr. on Thursday and will make sure he's okay with that. I certainly wouldn't want to have go through this again.

Thanks again

got2bfit, hello! I had surgery for plantar fasciitis in May and I increased my protein intake slightly to help the healing process. I ate very carefully and lost weight instead of gaining. You will probably lose a bit of your fitness level but if you continue to do strength work and watch your diet, you'll be shocked at how quickly you get back to it once you are on your feet. I took a long break and I was frustrated at first because I struggled to regain my fitness level BUT, it was so much quicker than when I was a beginner. Within two weeks, I was well on my way and by four had regained much of my strength and endurance.

I haven't returned to high impact activities and have minimized my cardio altogether with no ill effects to my fitness level. I crave cardio though and used to do it most days, including strength training days and I miss the intensity but I want to do this forever so I am adjusting to this new exercise regime.
What sort of surgery did you have? Heal well and you'll be kicking behind in no time!

Me too! I fell off my Bosu a week ago Sunday and I am still a mess. Doctor said I had a severe sprain and fitted me with an air cast but I still can't walk properly let alone work out. I have been doing upper body workouts but just started. My workout room is in the basement and until now I have been unable to negotiate the stairs. Very disappointing.

I miss my workouts! especially the new Cathe's now that the DVDs have arrived.:(

I had a bunionectomy with osteotomy. This is the second surgery I've had for this on the same foot. They will be removing the stitches tomorrow afternoon. YEAH!! It is such a pain to cover with a plastic bag to shower, oh and shaving my legs is a real chore too. Along with the bulky bandage, my foot is still too swollen to put on my crosstrainers-I tried. However, I was able to borrow one of my teenagers shoes. Even if it doesn't fit right it makes me feel a little more stable when lifting weights. On Sunday I was able to do mis, except for the lunges, and the warmup. It will be another 3 to 8wks before the Dr. allows cardio. However, once my stitches are out it should be okay to get back on the elliptical trainer with my mismatched shoes.

Happy Holidays!!

Got2befit, my neighbor had one and it's quite a process getting back to where you were but be patient. It took time but she's fully recovered and pain free!

Hedy, how are you coming along? Sprains are awful but they too become a distant memory! Be careful though, I found the ankle I sprained in a fall was inclined to easy reinjury after I had healed. I'd tweak it, never as severely as the original injury, but enough to slow me donw!

Wow! Take it easy there girl! I had this surgury years ago, and I certainly know what you are going though. I am looking at needing it again as well, but as long as I can put it off I will. I had it originally when I was 20 years old, but it was not successful. I wanted to get it out of the way before I had kids, which was smart. I will say that I am not in pain like before, but cosmetically I am a mess. Ugliest feet in the whole world:p !!! My kids are about half way there (14, 12, and 10) so if I can hang in there a bit longer I can try again when they are just a bit more self sufficient. I just hate the idea of being laid up the way you are describing. I have a fairly high tolorance for pain, and since I don't really feel it like I did before the surgury I figure I can tough it out a few more years.

Hope you are feeling better soon and enjoy cardio on the ball. What a great suggestion!

Thanks for asking Bobbi! My ankle is still a mess and I am going on three weeks now. The Dr said it was a severe sprain but this is ridiculous. I never realized how much it would slow me down but it sure has.

I am miserable because I really want to get back to those new BB workouts but can't. Darn :(

Oh, Hedy, that's awful! You just don't realize that something as innocuous sounding as a sprain can lay you up for weeks! Are you still using the air cast? I think one of the problems is it's so hard to heal when you have to be on your feet to live your life. I hope you see improvement soon. I resprained mine several times after it healed and if I am going to trip off a step or some such thing, it's always that left ankle that gets it. Chin up! It will heal and those BB's will be waiting for you! Try to elevate the foot when you can. It does help so much!

Wow, it's nice to know I am not alone. I just had my stitches removed yesterday and have been given the okay to swim, and also to ride a stationary bike with this very restrictive boot. I was able to do mis except for the lunges, just substituted plie's for those. I also had to lower the weight since I'm not really supposed to be on it-just borrowed one of my son's shoes for that foot. Let me tell you, my legs were quite sore the next couple of days.

Guess it's best for all us injured to allow ourselves to recover so we can start enjoying the bb series again. I received mine while still on crutches but it gives me time to preview them. Not very good at that either-I usually just put in a new tape and fumble my way through. That has worked for everything except Rythmic Step which I only tried once and decided I probably wasn't coordinated enough. StepWorks is one of my favorite so that leads me to believe it should be possible to learn RS-just haven't put in the time.

Best wishes to all for the Best Holiday Season ever!
