I keep on trying the T-bar rows....I think I'm doing them right, I think I'm going heavy enough & using proper form, but I just don't like 'em!

Does anyone have a suggestion for a substitute move to replace the sets of T-bar rows? I'm thinking seated 2-arm dumbbell rows, but I'm not even sure if that's an actual exercise.:-hmmm

Thanks!
Deb

Hi Deb. I don't like the T-Bar rows much either. I keep a barbell loaded up for them, but hate having to keep it around. Sometimes I'll just substitute regular bent over barbell rows, similar to the ones Cathe uses Power Circuit.

I'm looking for a substitute too. I just did this tape yesterday and no matter what I do, the t-bar rows just don't feel right.

The only thing I can think about on the two arm seated rows is that you may have to go lighter then if you were doing one arm at a time. Also, that would probably work the outer back and I think the t-bar rows target the center of the back.

How about a "rhomboid pinch"? where you stand erect holding dumbbells in each hand as if you were doing a bent arm side lateral raise for the shoulders but squeeze the center of the back instead?

My substitute

I don't care for t-bar rows either, so I do the same exercise, except with dumb bells. It feels much less awkward to me, plus I don't have to mess with trying to keep the end on the floor from sliding during the exercise, or changing my weight plates around quickly when I'm done. I go heavy ( For me that's 15 lb. dumb bells. ) and use the same stance and try to mimic the arm motions as much as possible. I think I'm working the same muscles, but I get a greater range of motion.

Have a fit day!

I don't like the end of the bar scratching my floor, so I substitute a 1-dumbbell (heavy) row for the t-bar row. I take the same stance as for the t-bar row, and hold the weight with both hands. Seems to me like this would have the exact same effect as a t-bar row (same rang of motion, etc.)

RE: try this

I really like these rows, but I do it the following way.
I always use a towel around the bar just below the weights that I have loaded. ... so that I don't really hold the bar but hold the towel. I hold the towel about 6-7 inches above the bar, and this works so well, and you'll be amazed how you feel it. This way you can really pull your shoulderblades together and feel the muscles working.
I also just put my mat under the other end, so I have no problem with my wooden floor.

Please try it before you write them off. It's an amazing exersize and gets you totally different than the normal bar row.

good luck

Yes!

I agree with Dorthe. I have used the towel to pull back and also a thin cushion under the end of the barbell on the floor for protection on my wooden floor. I also have a couple of ten pound ankle weights laying close by on the floor that I just drape over the top end of the bar for added weight when Cathe tells you to increase your weight. (Very easy to flop on and also off when done to even out your barbell for the next routine.)Just a suggestion!

Me Too

I do use a towel with this also. It seems to give a great range of motion. I love this exercise. And that was a great pointer Debbie about using the ankle weigths. I will definately have to try that next time.
