stuck in a workout rut

I wonder if this has happened to any of you recently. I'm currently really bored with my workouts. I do exercise videos, run/walk, and I attend boxing classes at a boxing gym. I make sure that I have variety but I'm tired of the variety that I have. I ordered LowMax and a High Step so I think that'll recharge my workouts. I'm going to get a pedometer to make the 10,000 steps goal. But until then, I'm kinding of just shlumping around, not finishing my workouts, or just not doing anything at all (except walking around the mall, the grocery store, or campus). I've lost 20 pounds in the last two years and I really don't want to go back there again. I still want to drop one dress size and this rut is just setting me back. Any words of wisdom? Please? ;(

All I can tell you is to keep pushing, and eventually you'll push through the boredom. It's happened to me before, too. Sometimes I take a few days off, and by then I feel guilty and get back into it. Just recently (I've posted a few things elsewhere about this), I have been considering getting back into running. I had to quit a few years ago due to knee problems. Well, as I found out the other day, running is still not an option! Such is life.

I think that sometimes my "ruts" are caused by just exercising in the same place - the living room - every day. I can get a change of scenery by going to a park and doing some serious hill climbing and hiking. But most of the time, I just grit my teeth and push!

Sorry I don't have better advice, but I know exactly what you're talking about!

I am stuck in a rut too. I just ordered some new tapes. I am going to start a new rotation. I have been doing 6 days of cardio and one body part per day. I only do 45 minutes total, with 3 days of high intensity workouts. I have made a lot of gains, but am not excited about working out like I used to be. Melissa

Hi,i used to get this way and found that its my body's way of saying i'm tired sit down,so now i schedule rest weeks every 3-4 months and it works like a charm,at the begining of the week im tired by the following weeking i am ready to kick butt again, dont underestimate how important rest is to physical training and dont worry you wont lose all the gains youve made in one week and believe me your body will thankyou, again rest is a big factor in fitness,

Thanks for sharing. I think I'll definitely see these few days as rest days. I agree that rest days are taken for granted when it comes to fitness.

A few days off every once in awhile is a great help in any exercise regimen or sport. I ice skate and find at times I start getting into a rut where it seems I am not improving on anything I am working on. Sometimes taking a week (or even some years 2) off skating helps tremedously. I go back after the time off, have the one day of getting my feet back under me and feeling comfortable and then I see great improvement in whatever new jump, etc I was working on. I try to do that at least once a year.

OOOH...I LOVE to ice skate, and did it for years and years. Miss it so much, but it's just not feasible for me right now, given my work schedule and budget. What level are you at? Are you doing the USFSA tests? I got through my Juvenile freestyle test and then switched to ice dance, which I loved! :)

Anyhow, not to hijack the thread--sorry! PM me. :)

Have you thought of doing something really new like trying something outside? Maybe go hiking w/ a friend somewhere really pretty or go roller blading or something just for fun, but that would be a great workout too?

I agree the resting is great. I get stuck sometimes thinking I can't take a day off or I will get out of sync, but when I do take a few days off I am always ready to go again and I have more umpf to go do it.
