STS shock cardio delivery - Sept. 2009

Cathlete
I went to the pre-order page and was surprised to see that this is still posted there:

"Though we do not guarantee a ship date for Shock Cardio and Travel Fit you should not expect delivery until late September 2009."

Obviously, this is not going to happen. As far as I know, there hasn't even been a filming date set and we are close to the time when we were told delivery would be when we pre-ordered these workouts.

How can SNM be so wrong on their estimates? Is there a reason for the delay?

Erica

I guess I read it differently. If it said expect delivery "by" the end of Sept then I would think it would be done before the end of Sept. But it says do not expect delivery "until" then end of Sept. That to me means don't expect it until the end of Sept at the earliest. Leaving room for it to come later. They have said a fall delivery. That could mean up till Dec 21.

i was wonering the same thing! I suppose they thought they were going to be done ealier. apparently not when Cathe commented on doing another STS cardio rehearsal just today (or yesterday). I bet it'll be closer to the end of the year before we get our DVD's....but it's aaaall good! it's totally worth the wait!!!:D

Catherine - you asked this question back in June:

"OK, so after the Eggland's Best event the word on the street is that filming for the project will not begin until September. I know that initially it was said September was the anticipated ship date. Can you give us some insight into this?"

And this was SNM's reply:

"I would hope by now that everyone would learn to ignore negative rumors about our presales. They are nearly always wrong. Remember all the untrue rumors about STS?"

First of all, please don't think I was attacking your post, because I wasn't ;) I was just merely stating how I read the statement.

Yep, I asked that ? because a lot of people were speculating AGAIN about Shock Cardio and it's production. SNM has never given a clear date on any of their projects and probably for a reason. Honestly, I do not care when them film or ship. SNM has also made it clear not to preorder unless you are willing to wait. I understand people get excited and it makes the waiting hard. But I know they will be quality workouts and will patiently wait for them :)

Here we go again!!!

If you don't want to wait, DON'T PREORDER!!!! We go through the same griping with every Cathe project. I preordered, and I'll get them when they're done - the preorder price made it worthwhile. When the DVD's are done & in our hands, we know they'll be good. Good enough for me!!!

I never said that I'm not willing to wait. I simply asked how SNM could be so wrong on their estimate (even if end of September was the earliest delivery date, it's 9/11 and there isn't even a filming date set!) and if there is a reason for the delay.

I like pre-orders...

I like not knowing exactly what I will get and when I'll get it. It's like a well-deserved present to me. I love surprises.

I knew it would likely be a long time, too, so I'm not bothered either. But it seems like it only makes sense to take the September 2009 part out of the preorder page altogether. Seems like it would just be easier not to have any confusion out there for people new to the whole Cathe pre-sale thing.

i can agree with that :D

i don't mind waiting but i also don't want to wait until next september to get them either. cathe or not i have a to draw a line for myself somewhere. so far since SNM addressed the whole tour/release date deal i am happy to wait even if its not released until february(rather not but would go that far if i wanted). if i get impatient or annoyed with a longer wait i know how to email customer service for cancel its not that big of a deal. and the updates on twitter have been keeping me plenty happy and satisfied with waiting.

http://cathe.com/step-rehearsal-for-shock-cardio This is a link for the last update that I have seen that even remotely updated shipping time. They say fall and I am not expecting till around the last day close to winter myself. I have learned to expect later than originally estimated. Although I was hoping for my birthday, now I am hoping for Christmas.
Yes, they do give great price discounts for pre ordering but I do wish they would wait till further into it before they do that myself. (like closer to a filming date) Anyway, they are usually great when they are done and well worth it. I wouldn't think it would take much to take that September date off though. We know that there is no way they are going to be done in Sept when they are still in rehearsals. They would have to be at the replicators to even think they might be ready.

You've been here since 1999. You know every well the estimates are nearly always off. No offense to you, Cathe, SNM or anyone. I just don't get why people pre-order all the time then when there's a delay, start complaining. I understand you have your money tied into this, but why keep doing pre-orders when you know there will be a delay and you can't wait?

. You know every well the estimates are nearly always off.

I guess I just figured that SNM would be embarrassed to run their business that way and would be more accurate with their estimates. Why would you want to be known as a company that can't meet it's own project completion date?

As I said earlier, it's not that I can't wait. I really do wonder how a business can be so far off on estimating completion of a project and if there is something that caused the delay.

I'll try my best to answer your concerns. What we've said in numerous threads and places on our website from the beginning is not to expect delivery until end of September, but also that the most likely date will be Fall of 2009. We still expect to release Shock Cardio in Fall of 2009, so we really haven't had a delay yet. When we give an estimated date it is simply our best guess of when we think a project will be completed and not a guarantee. This is why we always tell people not to preorder unless they're willing to wait.

Anytime you produce a new DVD you’re creating a product that has never been made before. Sometimes things go as planned, but in most cases they don’t. This is true for any company that creates a new product. Even companies the size of Microsoft can miss their estimated release date by years. So missing estimated release dates should not be unexpected. I know I see numerous threads in our forums every year about new DVDs produced by other instructors being released later than expected.

In our company we work 7 days a week once we start a project and usually work to well past midnight every day. Cathe and our staff are doing their best to get you your DVDs as quickly as possible, but quality is more important than speed, and quality unfortunately takes time. Yes, we take longer than most companies to produce a DVD, but I think we also produce a better quality product that stands the test of time. Hopefully most people will find the wait well worth it.

Thank you for your reply.

I understand that things don't go as planned but, in this case, it seemed that the delay is in filming and not in production and I was simply wondering about that. That's why I said in my original post that there hasn't been a filming date set and we are close to the possible late September date now. According to that delivery estimation, you must have expected filming to have been completed by now.

My husband is a software engineer. He has to, and does, meet customer project deadlines all the time in addition to producing a quality product. If his company is late with a project then his company incurs monetary penalties. They can't simply say that quality takes time and tell the customer they have to wait for that. The customer is already paying for a quality product and expects it on time.

We normally don’t give estimated release dates at all for a project, but in this case we decided to give everyone a rough idea of when we hope Shock Cardio will be released with the hope of preventing some of the issues of our last presale. Our timeline is based on our past experience which tells us that typically a project like this takes about six or seven months to complete. Our projection is not a based on filming by any certain date. It is just a rough guess based on our previous experience. Two thirds of our time in a project like this is spent on things that are done before filming begins. I know most people think that a project like this begins when filming starts, but this is really the final and easiest phase of the project. The one exception to this was our STS series which by its nature was a totally different type of project.

Though I don’t know which software development company your husband works for I can tell you that release deadlines are rarely met in this field. We actually had a thread posted in our forums last year about this subject by a Cathlete who was involved in software development. She posted research which showed, I think, only about 15% of all software projects are actually finished on time – 85% are not. I personally spend a lot of time managing and talking to software developers every week. Missing deadlines is very common and expected in software development despite some very long hours. It’s just the nature of the business.

I don't care what another poster claims. My husband has managed software projects for many years and has consistently met scheduled promised deadlines. Good engineers know how to estimate time and meet their deadlines. That's a fact of the industry.
