Stressed out about Eating!

I've heard this alot too. They say body is depleted of glycogen overnight, so the only thing left to burn is fat. I don't know how true it is, but I do it every morning. I feel sick if I exercise after eating and have alway exercised on an empty stomach. Many people cannot do that and need to eat first. You simply need to do what works for you. If you are tripping over your step and feeling faint from not eating, it doesn't do you any good and you risk injury.

I usually exercise before eating, mainly because it works out better for me in terms of timing. I've definitely noticed I can work out better when I have eaten something, though. Run faster, have more energy, etc.

I generally eat a second dinner when I get home at 9:30. I eat when I leave for class at 4:30, dinner #1, so when I get up to exercise at 7am it isn't that long since I last ate!!

But I still think it's hard to eat and exercise and get to work on time!!

thanks for the reply diana, i appreciate it. this is interesting. a running coach told me, and i've read this in many running journals, mags etc, that your body needs adequate glycogen stores in order to burn fat during exercise, especially high intensity cardio. ie, if you don't have adequate glycogen stored for muscle fuel, your body won't burn fat.

Go, Clare!

I'll add: Don't deprive yourself either. Granted, stay away from obsessing over cals, carbs, etc., but don't go overboard thinking you can only have "healthy" carbs. Have a piece (a piece, not 10 pieces) of good chocolate here and there. Eat some cake at a wedding, don't bake a whole cake and shovel it down in one night! Get the point? "Treat" yourself well in a roundabout way...Take care and stay balanced. LISTEN TO YOUR BODY.

Connie, you are driving yourself nuts...and not having fun with your food. I've been on programs that tried to make food or different foods (like sugar or fats) the enemy. Food is our friend, as is water! It's not WHAT we're eating that's killing us...it's how much we're eating. For me, it's all about portion control. I eat good, just too much:) But you're looking for foods you can eat that will make calorie counting either unnecessary or easier.

We buy the light breads from the local bakery outlets, very fresh and they come in whole wheat, Italian, and white varieties. The calories for two slices come to only 80, the carbs to 19 grams, the fiber is 5 grams, and the protein is 4 grams. Makes sandwiches not only possible, but these breads (DH favors the Italian, but the whole wheat is tasty, too) taste pretty good:)

Fruits are carbs, too. But many are loaded with fiber (I favor apples, you remember the old saying...an apple a day keeps the doctor away?). We also eat a lot of bananas (a local market carries them cheap), and I won't turn up my nose at canned fruit or lite fruit juices (I'm drinking reduced sugar cranberry juice mixed with diet lemon-lime soda and it's become a favorite morning ritual...with plenty of ice!).

You've gotten some great advice here. Hopefully it will make you feel better about eating and help you enjoy your food more!
