Strength training videos

The time has come to shift towards strength training and I have been reading up on Pyramids, S&H and PS. But I feel spoilt for choice. Can anyone point me in the right direction? I'm bewildered. Thanks!

Hi Jacqueline! I think if I had to choose one strength training vid to start out with it would probably be PS. S&H is an awesome series, but each w/o is about an hour long and takes a lot of concentration. I also love The Pyramids, but the weight change in between each muscle group is really quick so if you're not used to lifting, it might take a little time to get used to changing your weights so quickly. All three are great workouts though.:7
For endurance workouts my all time favorite is CTX Leaner Legs and Upper Body Split. I think I have seen more results with these two workouts than any other Cathe weight vid. Power Hour and Muscle Endurance are awesome total body endurance tapes.
Now that I've probably totally confused you, just remember you'll eventually end up buying them all anyway!}(

I would recommend the PS Series or the Pyramids. Both are very well designed efficient strength training workouts. You also will get a lot of bonus workouts with the Pyramid DVD. Both of these are favorites of mine.

Hi Jacqueline, I agree that the PS Series is a greater starter for you. They are not too easy as far as the lifting goes, but very easy to follow and you can adjust your weights to what works for you. I LOVE the Pyramids but also feel like they might be a bit advanced for someone just starting strength training. Then, the rest will be history because you will want them ALL! Also, MIS is great too for a beginner! Total body strength tape all rolled into one! Have fun and let us know what you decide.

I absolutely reccommend Max Intensity Strength as a starter workout for learning correct form on weight training. The pace is not too quick, it's a total body workout, there is a wide range of exercises to learn, and it will teach you the basics.

After that, get the Pyramids for strength and busting through a plateau, and the CTX Leaner legs & Upper body split: both of these combos are awesome and have done great things for me as an uper body weakling!

Then, when you are ready, invest in the Slow and heavy series to train intensely individual muscle groups.

Good luck

I have to agree with the Pure Strength suggestion. It is a great basic building block set for strength training, and I had someone recommend it to me for pure strength building. Some of the other strength videos focus on different things, i.e., you may not be able to max out your weight with Slow & Heavy because of the slow count. This one is Pure Strength baby!

Either way you can't lose with Cathe workouts. Just get them all!

It depends how much time you want to devote. I think PS is great to start with if you don't mind putting in at least three days per week, as it consists of 3 full-length workouts. The same is true for S&H, although I would not recommend it for a beginner. I would not recommend starting with the Pyramid workouts because they are repetitious and I fear you will be turned off to strength training because of the boredom factor. MIS is perfect if you have less time to spend. Hope I didn't bewilder you further. Let us know what you decide.

Thanks everyone for your input! Especially to Nancy for pointing out the all important consideration - which I had not really thought about – thinking isn’t normally my strong point:) – and that is how much time I was prepared to dedicate to strength training. Normally I set aside 10 hours per week to exercise (stepping and aerobics) but feel reluctant to reduce my cardio time by too much so the 1 hour (give or take) total body strength workouts seem more suitable to me rather than an hour per body area! So I’ve ordered a DVD set with MIS included to get me started and I can hardly wait for it to arrive. I’ll take it from there and see how I go but like Sherry said, I’ll probably end up buying all the workouts eventually anyway but I’m going to learn to walk first before I can run!

Thanks again everyone.

Jacqueline-

That's perfect! That DVD has Power Hour, which is an entire strength workout in less than one hour. I also think it is the most fun of Cathe's strength/endurance workouts. The shoulder routine is my all-time favorite. I neglected to mention it in my earlier email. That DVD should keep you busy for quite some time to come! Good choice!! Enjoy. And let us know how it turns out. :)
