STRAINED SERRATUS ANTERIOR

Nanbo

Cathlete
I think I strained my serratus anterior muscle or an oblique. The initial pain was in my back (I thought was lat)...it came on the day after I tried to push myself too far during Turbo Barre , the ab move with your elbow stuck to the floor and rising the other side up. I did Cardio Supersets the next night and felt okay until the next day when my right side was very tender. It felt like I bruised my ribs; hurt like the dickens to cough or sneeze or take a really deep breath. It has been about 2 weeks now and I've been careful to avoid any core work or toe-pushups (tough with the new series!) and have been doing only Turbo Barre (minus core) and walking and taking a LOT of rest days :(. Still hurts to cough, sneeze, breathe deep, lay down on that side, etc.

Has anyone else done this before? How long until you healed enough to get a good workout. I really hate not being able to give it my all!!!

Just wanted to update my post:
After REALLY babying my core, my side is feeling much better...but I still need to be cautious (there are still some underlying twinges :()! I've been doing Turbo Barre every other day (minus the core section after the V-sits), alternating with walking (cardio was excrutiating!).
Today I'll be doing the arm work from Turbo Barre and LIS Lower Body Trisets. Tomorrow I'm venturing into cardio again with Slide and Glide. Keep your fingers crossed for me!

Hi there Nancy! Sorry to hear about that :-((
My husband had this problem years ago when he lifted heavy weights. He had to back off for a long time (2 months) for it to fully recover. Funny thing was that he thought he would never be able to lift heavy again, but a few weeks in and he was back to his old self, lifting the same. I think time, rest, and listening to your body is the key. Good luck and take care.
