Stepping 2-3 days in a row

I've heard it's not a good idea to do step 2-3 days in a row one right after another. Is it really true? Is it that bad or does it just depend on the person and how their body reacts to it?

Would love to hear from Cathe and others on this.

Edith :)

From what I've heard stepping 2 or 3 days in a row can lead to overuse injuries. Normally if I step too often I get little aches and pains in my knees. Also I think my body has adapted to stepping as I do it very often. Unless the step workout is an interval or circuit type one, I find that I do not work as hard as I would like to. I've been taking advantage of the great weather to do more hiking, biking, swimming, walking and jogging. I find that I am becoming smaller and harder (more so than when I was just doing 3 days of aerobics). Cross training is definitely very effective.

I also Racewalk and jog too and agree crosstraining is vital.

What I'm thinking about is this winter I may want to do step like 2-3 days in a row some weeks. I wouldn't want to do it 7 days a week every week or anything like that. ;-) !

I think 3 days in a row may be too much. If it's the CTX series (or similar), you might be able to get away with it. But I think it depends on the individual. Like the other post, my knees would ache when I did too much step. Plus, I'd be bored doing step that much! But try it out if you want and see.

The key is not to use high impact step videos like IMAX & MIC consecutively, better to leave a rest day in between. You could do MIC and Rhythmic Step or Power Max.

Where Cathe says in her videos 'I would not advise you to do this tape consecutively. You can use one of my other step tape......' follow it. HOwever, there is a rotation on here that goes like this:

Mon: MIS
Tues: MIC
Weds: BodyMax
Thurs: Interval Max
etc.

It uses all the high impact videos and strenght videos. I think that this something like this could work if you do not do it for long periods and if you want to lose weight a.s.ap. then a heavy weight followed by high impact aerobics is ok because you are not pounding continuously.

My personal rule is a light and then hard work out followed by a light.

Thanks Yen for the reply.

I am knowledgeable about rotating weight training and stepping and also feel it's a good way to train.

What I want to know about is maybe one week a month if the winter weather is horrible (it gets that way where I live) if I can safely do step 2-3 days in a row if it's low impact step one day. I need to do cardio 6 days a week. And, no, I don't plan to do step 7 days a week in a row ever.

Thanks so much

Have you thought about buying an exercise bike? That is a cardio work out with little impact on your joints, so it could be alternated with a video or even lower your step height for 1-2 days so you don't bulk up (some women thinks stepping too hard gives them big thighs).

You know, running is the highest impact on your body and yet there are people who can do it every day (my neighbour for example is about 50 something and he's been running every day for years). He doesn't think there is a problem, I think that because he does weights as well, which means makes his legs stronger to run.

I personally could do cardio 6 days a week indoors, but I would do cycling and step for variety and intensity.

You should go for your rotation and see how your body responds. If it doesn't like it, it will tell you.

Thanks so much Yen. A bike is a great idea but I have a Fitness USA membership (since the 80's) and go there 2 days a week sometimes 3 and use the bikes, EFX machines and treadmills for cross training.

I live in a real snowbird state and seems every cotton pickin winter I get stuck in a week where I am doing well to get to work and back because of a couple of those operation snow dumps:-rollen !! Those are the weeks I wind up only getting in like 3 cardio's because I don't want to do step two days in a row. I have some other video's but am a step freak! Friends of mine that workout at home say they do step 3-4 times a week in a row no problems.

I jog outdoors in the spring and summer and I never do that two days in a row either but like you know people that run 5-6 days a week one day right after another. So I got to thinking, golly, running is high high impact and if that can be done why not step.

IMHO stepping 2 -3 days in a row could cause an injury. Just putting one different type of cardio in between can help. I like Cardio kicks for a change. For a steady stae workout a 60" power walk is great and so is a stationary bike. You can check the rotations that have been put together by Cathe and others, and see Cathe's interval treadmill workout and steady state treadmill. These are adaptable to a stationary bike also.

I suffered plantar Fascitis from over use and under stretching, and at that time I was doing alot of stepping.

BTW I do 5 days of cardio per week and usually 2 weighted workouts.
