step height for leg press in ME??

Is it really 16" in Muscle Endurance? I keep counting the risers and hoping I'll come up with 14 but...I suspect it really is (gulp) 16...can anyone confirm?
(I did the leg presses on 16 the first time and it nearly killed me!)

Hi Christine,

Yes, it's 16" - I was surprised when I saw that too and kept counting the risers. There was a lot of discussion about this on VF and it seemed like a lot of people were choosing to use a lower step height. I like the higher step and just use a lighter weight than usual, but everyone's level of comfort is different.

I know Cathe addressed this in the Ask Cathe forum somewhere - I think she mentioned that her legs responded well to varying her step height for leg presses.

I think I will stick with 14". I'm only 5', so I think anything higher would be too much stress on my knees. 14" is plenty tough for me anyway!

I'm sticking with 14" for these lighter presses (10" med ball) and 12" for the heavier ones in PLB. Better to be safe than sorry, and it's just as effective. In fact, sometimes when the step is higher, it's easier to push off with the back leg than to push up through the front leg, thus reducing the effectiveness on the glutes and hamstrings. I like to use a height where I can dip a little bit below 90-degrees at the bottom part of the move, to really start the push through the glutes.

with the step setup I have (club step and 4 risers, and/or a wooden step DH made at 12") I can do either 12" or 16", but not 14. I tried ME again on 16", used just the 10 pound plate and it was a bit easier the second time, I think I was just so shocked the first time it felt harder than it was. I will keep using 16", I think, for this one but I definitely only use 12" on PLB and other heavy work (PS for example).
