Starving in the Night

Since I have been working out, I eat small healthy meals or drink smoothies every 2-3 hours from the time I wake up until I go to bed (which is around midnight). At about 3:00 am I wake up starving. I get up and take my thyroid meds because it is the only time my stomach is empty. But it is hard to fall back to sleep when I am so hungry. Anyone else have this problem?? Linda :)

I get that way too, especially when I have been working out consistently and trying to manage my diet. At that point I am usually eating several hundred calories over my target because I am so hungry. Sometimes it feels that I have been eating all day and yet I am too hungry to fall asleep at night, or wake up sometime between 2-4 and just lay there. I can lay there for hours and then when I give up and eat something I fall asleep in minutes. It is really frustrating.

Are your targets too low? Maybe it would be worth adding 100 calories or so to your last meal of the day?

A little extra healthy fats (olive oil, coconut oil.) at dinner should help with that.
I used to have that problem. I keep a small stash of almonds by my bed for emergencies (low blood sugar.) I hope that helps.

Thank you all for your help!!:D I eat plenty of calories and I do add flax oil to my smoothies but I will try adding extra and have some almonds close by at night. ;)

I use a spoonful of peanut (or almond) butter. Satisfies my snacking need and my hunger. I've found that if I make some popcorn w/nutritional yeast it's ok but doesn't fill me up nearly as well. The protein really does help.
