st. lucia

My husband and I honeymooned there in late September of 2001. We stayed at the Sandals golf and spa resort. It is a beautiful place to visit!!! We had a great time and were not ready to come home. HOwever, we didn't leave the resort so I don't think that it would be a fun place to go if you're wanting an active vacation. We were warned upon our arrival that it's not a particularly safe place and that we probably shouldn't leave the resort. I actually posted on this topic last week, I think, when someone was asking about sandals resorts. It was a nice place, but as I posted then, I didn't think that the amenities were quite as nice/clean as they should have been for what we paid!!!!! Hope this helps:)

Hubby and I honeymooned there in Sept, 1995. Unfortunately (I know this is bad) I cannot remember the name of the resort. It wasn't a popular one since we were the only honeymooners that were there during our stay. It was very nice though. You could get massages, had nightly music, great food, swimming pool if you didn't want to swim in the ocean. The thing we liked was laying on the beach and they served drinks right to you. I was surprised because they started to remember what my hubby was drinking and would just bring it right to him without asking. When we were ready for another we just put the flag up. Mine were harder to remember because I tried different drinks and had to be careful because if I drink too much I get really bad headaches when in the hot sun. We had a great time, even went on a helicopter ride. I wish I could remember the name of it. It wasn't a Sandals resort, we heard those were too "busy" to really enjoy yourselves so we chose a different resort. If it comes to me I will let you know.

I absolutely love this island. I have been to St. Lucia three times and have recommended the island to several of my friends (they all ranted and raved about this island as well).

Most of the resorts are located in the northern part of the island just north of their capital city, Castries. There are two airports that service the island; one in the south where the large jets land and a smaller one in Castries called Vigie airport. I strongly recommend you fly on a commuter jet from San Juan, Puerto Rico, to Vigie airport. It should only be a 10-15 minute drive from the airport to your hotel (instead of a 2+ hour ride on a windy, ill-repaired road from the southern airport).

I stayed at the Windjammer Landing resort the first time. This was an excellent hotel; however, it's a bit remote so you can't walk to anything. I stayed at one of the Sandals resorts my second stay back in 1998 or so. Sandals now has 3 resorts on the Island and I've known people who stayed, and enjoyed, all 3 resorts. Last time I was on the Island in 2000, I stayed at a place in the middle of everything near Rodney Bay. It was nice being in this section of town as restaurants and shops were in walking distance of my hotel.

The people there are very nice. However, it is a third world country (as most of the Carribean islands are), so be prepared to see poverty. With that said, I had no problems walking around and talking to the locals. However, be careful in what they try to offer you. One person tried to give me a package containing, I'm sure, an illegal substance. This is the carribean, after all.

For activities, I highly recommend you take the rain forest tour. What fun! I absolutely loved it (and, I believe I had my best meal while on this tour). The water on the Carribean side is beautiful and WARM. This is a volcanic island, so several of the beaches are fairly small. Snorkeling is great near the Pitons. I believe that the snorkeling on St. Lucia is ranked one of the top 10 (0r 20) in the world.

I also did the catamaran trip down to the southern part of the island where you go to the drive-through volcano, saw the beautiful botanical gardens, followed by snorkeling in Marigot Bay (they filmed portions of Dr. Doolittle here).

E-mail me if you have additional questions. I absolutely LOVE this island!

St Lucia is a beautiful island. Fortunately, it is still somewhat un-commercialized, which makes it feel like paradise. I visited a few years ago and stayed at Club St. Lucia. It was decent, but I remember several other visitors got moved to other resorts (due to overbooking?). They stayed at Sandals (couples only) and loved it! Check out the link below, and you can read reviews on other hotels in St Lucia.

Definetely go there - it's so much better than Mexico! Also, my parents, who have been pretty much EVERYWHERE (Aruba, Bahamas, Jamaica, Punta Cana, Belize, all over Mexico, etc.) LOVED IT!

Hope that helps!

There's also a sports/fitness all-inclusive place called Le Sport up in Gros Islet (northern tip of the island) that's supposed to be great (it's expensive). I don't know of anyone who has been to this resort, though. I did read very good reviews of this hotel in Fodors.
