Squished toes

To Cathe or anyone with any helpful advice:

This may sound strange, but...I've been feeling like my toes on my left foot are getting "squished" (for lack of a better term) when I work out. Basically, it feels as though my toes of my left foot don't have enough room in the toe box of my shoe. I hadn't really noticed it until about the last six months but then again I have been working out more frequently and perhaps with a little more high impact than I used to during this time. I hadn't really noticed it prior to this time and I don't notice it when I'm not working out. The pressure (or squished feeling) seems to be not very noticeable at the beginning of the workout and then gets more noticeable toward the end of the workout. My present and last pair of aerobic shoes are Rykas. I don't know if maybe one foot is wider than the other or if these shoes run narrow or if I'm now going to have to purchase one wide and one regular width shoe every time I buy fitness shoes. Anyway, if anyone else has experienced this or has any ideas, I would love to hear from you.

Thanks,
Lisa

Shoes too small?

It sounds like your shoes are just too narrow or short. I have wide feet to begin with, and my left foot is slightly larger than my right, so I always try on the left shoe when buying shoes. They also say that your feet are larger/wider in the evenings than mornings, so if you recently switched workout times, or bought new shoes in the morning, that may have something to do with it. My feet also grew a 1/2 size with each of my pregnancies. I started off a size 8 and now I'm a perfect 9 1/2 (it's so fun trying to find size 9 1/2. Not too many companies make it. Nine is too small and 10 is too large

) Different companies have different sizing too. I usually have to try on a 9, 9 1/2, and 10. i hope this helped somewhat.

Tight fit

Hi Lisa! This could be due to many things. Many of them Jul's reply already listed (thanks Jul). But in any case, you may need to try shoes that offer a wider toe box. Sometimes shoe companies offer the same shoe model in wide sizes as well as standard sizes. Just in case you were considering going with another Ryka I just wanted to point out that their latest shoe "the Evolution" runs on the small side along the pinky toe area and at the very top of the shoe(at least it has for the 6 of us who have tried them on). We have all ordered a 1/2 size to one full size up. But as far as cushion and support are concerned, the shoe is pretty comfortable AND supposedly is going to come in a wide size. Hopefully that takes care of the problem. Good Luck!

Thanks so much!

Thanks for the advice! I think that with my next pair of Rykas I will check for a wide size if possible and/or will go a 1/2 size up...hopefully this will take care of the problem. Gotta take care of those feet in order to keep up with your high intensity tapes Cathe!

Thanks again,

similar situation

Hi lisa--
I'm not sure if you are experiincing the same thing I am, but it kind of sounds like what I felt in my left foot about 3 or 4 years ago. It started out wwith my shoe feeling too tight, and has since become a very painful problem, which I have yet to go to a doctor to get diagnosed! It generally happens when i am working out, but also now when I am going down stairs (especially barefoot) , or even just sometimes when I'm walking around. Now it feels more like there is not enough room in my foot for my toes to fit--the bones are rubbing together or a nerve is being pinched or SOMETHING. Anyway, I have wide feet, and I suspect this is from wearing shoes that were too narrow all my life. But my suggestion to you is to ask a doctor, and not just hope that new shoes will fix the problem. I wish I had taken care of my feet before they got into this condition! I'm just a procrastinator as far as doctors go.

Thanks for the warning

I'm sorry to hear about your condition...mine hasn't progressed to this stage yet. Once I get the name of a good podiatrist (I knew of one before but have since moved to another state), I do plan on getting it checked out just to make sure it's nothing more serious. I think seeing a doctor would be good idea since I had a nasty bout of plantar fascitis a couple of years ago (this did clear up with a lot of rest and low/no impact activity) and currently am bothered with osteoarthritis in one of my toes from time to time. Anyway, I hope you will see a doctor also...it's never too late...better safe than sorry.
