spring cleaning

I have been getting lots of things done around the house now that spring is here. One of the things I have been slowly doing is cleaning out the storage room in my garage.

I have several large storage boxes of toys, mainly dolls and stuffed animals, from my childhood. My Mom made me take them when I moved out some 19 years ago, and they've been in storage ever since.

I had forgotten all the things in those boxes. It was like a treasure trove of memories of my Mom and my Grandmothers. The Raggedy Ann and Andy my Mom made me. All the Barbie clothes my Grandma hand-sewed for me. All the yarn animals my Grams made me. Also all the stuffed Garfields they bought me over the years (I was an avid collector).

Some of these are falling apart and I had to discard, but some are still in good shape, so I'm going to try to give them to Toys for Tots.

I hate to have to throw out or give away these items, but I'm 42 and have no children. I've asked all my friends if they want them for their grandchildren, but most of them already have more toys than they need. I'm hoping that they will go on to brighten the lives of other children, and I think Toys for Tots would be a great way to do this.

Mostly, I am humbled by the amount of love these women in my life have shown me. All the little things they did for me. The sheer amount of time; especially from my Mom. I wish my Grandma and Grams where still here. I hope my Mom is around for many years to come.

I can do nothing more than behave in a way that would make me worthy of their love. That is my goal in life.

Oh, don't throw it ALL away. Some of that is precious, sentimental stuff. OK, maybe the stuffed Garfields can go. ;)

I have an apple box in a closet that is full of "memories" like that. I have a few handmade dolls that were precious to me. I do have kids, but my DD isn't playing with those. They're too precious. Occasionally, I just get them down and reminisce. So, some of that is worth keeping IMO.

At the same time, I have been on a Spring Cleaning kick myself. And I live in Africa where it's not even Spring! :D So I understand the need/desire to sort through and get rid of stuff. I've finished my room and have moved on to the office. Watch out! ;)

I'm keeping a few things. The first Garfield my Grams got me, one of her yarn animals that was my favorite. Just can't keep it all. It'll get ruined in time and go to waste.

I talked to the local Toys for Tots rep today. They aren't taking donations right now, but they will start in October. I think I'll keep them until then, and donate at that time.

I've give a bunch of children's books to my local library too. Hopefully all this old stuff will find new homes.
