Splenda Has Calories!!!

Hey everyone,

Just got off the WW message board at WeightWatchers.com, it seems Splenda has calories. One of the WW members contacted the company that makes Splenda, 1 packet has 4 calories and 1 cup is 96 calories.

Just wanted to pass this info along.

According to recent research, Equal has come under fire for causing everything from benine tumors to Parkinson-like symptoms.

So I guess it's either nothing or go back to good old Sweet and Low OR
just watch how much Spenda we use.

I tend to use it more on he weekends. I only put it in my oatmeal and coffee in the am and the rest of the day I have either black coffee or Sweet and Low.

I really like the taste of Splenda -- now I know why!!:)

Hmmmmm........wonder why it's not listed on the box I have. Weird. Well, I like Splenda, and I'll keep using it. Even if it does have calories, they're still far lower than regular sugar. Also, I didn't think it'd be long before the witchhunt began for this new sugar substitute. :::rolls eyes heavily::: Tomorrow: oatmeal with Splenda and cinnamon!! :7

I just saw a commercial about Splenda, and it stated that Splenda has no calories. Sounds like false advertising, then.

I prefer to use natural sweeteners that are several times sweeter than sugar, but with a lower glycemic index, like stevia (for sweetening beverages) or agave nectar.

On the boxed Splenda in Canada, nutritional info is on them. I remember vividly when I was on WW, calculating 1 cup of Splenda being equivalent to 2 points, so 96 calories seems correct (I don't have a Splenda box handy right now, so I can't verify).

This news is a load of you know What!!!! It upsets me because I'm one of those people who has to log every calorie, and it IS false advertising! I, too, use Sweet & Low instead of Eqaul most of the time, and I'll sure be careful how much I use Splenda.

Rats!

There are two kinds of Splenda. One has calories, the other doesn't. The yellow box has zero calories and I believe, the white and blue box has like 2 calories/tsp. or something like that. Sooo, check which box you buy. Not sure why they made two kinds???

Debbie, I had no idea that they made two different kinds. That's really strange. Does anyone know why??

I could be wrong about this, but I believe that some products advertise that they have no calories, but they really do. I'm thinking about the "I Can't Believe It's Not Butter" spray - per serving, it can legally listed as no calories because it's less than one or two, but the bottle itself contains loads of calories. I'm guessing it's the same with Splenda? If you use the serving size, the calories are so low they can be counted as zero, but when you use an amount such as a cup, the calorie count goes way up.

Hope that made sense.

Just wanted to add that the FDA only requires labeling for 5 or more calories per serving, so anything under that can say 0.
The company is just taking advantage of a loophole!

I tried Splenda but didn't think it tasted like sugar. I usually sweeten with honey from the desert because it's supposed to help with seasonal allergies because the bees use local sources of pollen. I don't like the calorie free sweeteners. They are too sweet and have an aftertaste and may cause health problems.
