So will you get the shot?

I'm not sure how I feel about getting the H1N1 shot. It hasn't been tested on a large group yet and it was rushed into production. The CDC says it is safe and that they only foresee mild reactions. It's scary though that the first people who will be taking it are pregnant women and children. What if there is a problem that doesn't come to light until it's basically "tested" on the general population? What do you guys think? I'm trying to put myself in the place of a pregnant woman and ask myself if I would risk it either way. And then there are schools that are requiring it for the kids and I don't know if I would want my child to take it or not. I'm not saying I am against the vaccination, just hesitant.

Hi Liann,

I wonder about this also. Personally I never bother with the flu shot. I get colds but I can't tell you the last time I came down with a flu. One of these years I may be hit with a doozie, but for now I'm young enough, yet old enough and healthy enough that the flu will only leave me sidelined for a few days.

I consider myself very lucky I don't have to make the decision for a really young one, or that the elderly or pregnant do.

I'm not. The years I have taken a flu shot I have come down with a very nasty flu. I quit taking them. This administration seems to be in a rush to do everything, pass bills, flu shots, just makes me nervous that the testing has not been done.

I don't like that they are forcing medical workers to take the shot or lose their jobs.

I'm not planning to.

What I am doing is trying to live a very immune-system-supportive life style...and lots of hand washing.

Something is going to freeze over before I get that flu shot. But as a disclaimer I never get a flu shots, nor do I get my kids vaccinated for the flu. They got most of their regularly recommended vaccines but in general I would say I am more anti-vaccine than for it.

I would never take any medication, vaccine or regular that is new on the market, especially one that was concucted in a hurry.

That being said, I really doubt the effictiveness of any flu shot. It is far from a surefire, you got the shot, bam, you are protected. Flu viruses have a funny way of developing differently than we expect and mutate.

I thought this was an interesting article about the swine flu and the myth that are spread. I think that Mike Adams, the author of the article sometimes can be a little over the top but I think he makes some good points.

I think any drug and vaccines have impacts on our bodies and even though most people won't drop dead, negative impacts may not show until months or years down the road and with my immune system being in fairly decent shape I don't feel I need to take the risk of unknown side effects when it is unlikely that the flu or swine flu will result in anything else than just being sick for a few days.

But that's just me, the anti-drug homeo-psycho-path :eek::p

Its a NO for me....but I don't get the regular Flu shot either....very rarely sick....I think if you eat right, exercise and get your sleep, wash your hands there is no need.

I don't plan on getting it. I have never gotten a flu shot. We've already had 2 cases of H1N1 at work. We now have a strict policy about coming in when you are sick and you are required to get a note to be allowed back to work.

I don't plan to get it; I've never gotten the flu shot and probably never will. I agree that this is not tested enough. When I saw my NP yesterday she was pressuring me to get it. It will be free here, as is the regular flu shot. I wish my office had a policy about not coming to work when you're sick, but everyone wants to be a martyr. I've been off work for the past two days ill and have missed all my workouts because someone here won't get down off the cross.

In our policy, you are not allowed to come into work even if a family member has the flu (and you are healthy). I'm not sure how they would know that unless you told them. You are required to stay home for 7 days.

No, I won't be getting it.

I'll instead focus on keeping my immune system strong, and using preventive measures.

But I'm also not in the high risk group (it's theorized that those of us who are older than 18-25 (or whatever that age group high-risk group is) have perhaps previously been exposed to an earlier version of the virus, so our immune systems are better capable of fighting it off.

Regardless of how well I've taken care of myself, the years I didn't get the shot, I suffered terribly (asthma and flu don't go well together). The years I've gotten the shot, I've done very well. So...I get the regular, annual flu shot. My kids get it too, and my younger one also has asthma. We tried skipping the shot for her as well, and that was a huge mistake.

I'm not so sure about the H1N1 vaccine though.

No, like Kathryn more about eating healthier, preventive measures, etc. Too many chemicals in the body and no one really knows the side effects later on down the road.

Yeah, that's a tough spot to be in. Glad I don't have to make that decision.

DH is an Infectious Disease specialist, so he's quite familiar with bugs and vaccines. We've discussed the H1N1 vaccine, and he's leaning towards vaccinating the kids, but I'm not comfortable with it yet.

In one of our recent conversations, he talked about the risk of H1N1 specifically to pregnant women. I forget the stats he quoted, but I remember the mortality rate being high. A friend/fellow physician and his wife want to get pregnant, and DH advised them to at least try to wait until the traditional flu season is over.

Another microbiologist and friend feels there's a good chance H1N1 won't be as vicious as feared. Of course, we'll still see deaths. It's still flu, and flu itself isn't benign for everyone.

The way I see it, it's one of those things where many factors will come into play. Our past flu vaccinations may alter how H1N1 behaves in our population, and God knows how many other variables will participate. I'm not TOO worried about it, but I admit to waivering a little when it comes to my 10 year old. Her little lungs turn on her when she's sick. :(

Nope, not gonna. I've had the flu 2x in my life, once when I was 5 or 6, and once about 9 or 10 years ago. I'll take my chances. Now if they had a shot against the stomach flu I'd be all over that. Didn't get that from the time I was in Jr high, until DS started bringing it home from school a few years back. That I can't stand.

Before I was 'required' to for my job (healthcare), I never got the flu shots. But I decided I'd rather get the shots than work in a mask all day long. :(

Sounds like most of us are on the same page...We will not be getting the flu shot either...I get a cold once a winter, and the flu about once every 10 years...

Heh, I hear ya. That's not true flu, probably Norovirus, but still...it sucks. We've been fortunate in that we've only had it circle through the family a couple of times. (Yet another benefit of homeschooling. We avoid the classroom outbreaks.)

DH is mysteriously immune to all of this, by the way. Amazes me considering the number of sick patients he used to see.

Well, I just found out that 3 of a co-worker's kids have the swine flu. They are at the hospital now and it has been confirmed. I'm supposed to go to lunch with this co-workers mother-n-law who is one of my best friends and she just came from seeing the kids. I'm feeling very paranoid about being near any of them.
