So what's going on with Joaquin Phoenix?

Does anyone remember when he was in "Parenthood"? He was the 13-year-old son of Diane Weist (sp?). He spoke in one-syllable words in that role. I want him to be well, so much so that I've convinced myself that he is just practicing for his role in "Parenthood 2". ;)

Seriously I am a huge fan of his, especially after Gladiator. Oh! And there was a movie about brothers... with Jennifer Connelley... what was it called? He was amazing in that too.

I'm hoping this is just acting.

I'd hate to think it would be drugs, especially after River. :( River was also a very talented actor.

Are you talking about "We Own the Night"? That was good.

I have only seen Gladiator, Ladder 49 and Walk the Line, I really liked him in all of them. The hair and the beard now gives me the heebie jeebies though <shudder>

I guess he's always had some sort "contentious" relationship with the media ever since his brother's untimely passing and he's been know to make really off comments to them.

Stacey, my DH said the exact same thing!
I will say, I thought it was funny when he stuck his gum under the desk.:D:D

I really hope it's all an act. I've always enjoyed his movies especially Ladder 49 since DH is a firefighter.

I may be wrong but I think he has a wife and kids? I'm just wondering if they are a bit scared and intimidated by his appearance.

My guess is it isn't an act. His whole family is a bit odd, & if you think about the emotional trauma he must've gone through w/his brother's death I can imagine at some point he'd just leave the business.

I think it's sad. He is a phenomenal actor.

That didn't even come off as remotely serious. He was looking down to not laugh - notice he looks down after each time he says/does something "weird." And the beard was conveniently hiding a near constant smirk on his face. That was totally and absolutely a joke. I thought he was pretty funny, too.

I remember years ago, he changed his name (from "Leaf" to Joaquin---good choice, IMO! Though I seem to recall he was born Joaquin, changed to Leaf, then went back to Joaquin? Something odd like that).

His parents were kind of hippies, and they chose the name Phoenix (not their original last name).

They also gave their kids all kinds of 'unique names', tied to the Earth, thinkgs like River, Summer, Rain... "Leaf" has got to be the oddest choice of the bunch, though as I said above, he might have been the one to choose it.

Both Joaquin and River are/were such good actors (but both seem/ed troubled).

I know, but he is a talented actor so it's possible he was acting. I hope, I hope.
If he was stoned, wouldn't they know that before he came on stage?
I hope it's not drugs:(. He held River in his arms as he was dying. You would think he would know better. So very sad. :(:(
My favorite Joaquin movie was Gladiator. I loved him in that role!

Wow, I never knew Joaquin and River were related. Never put two and two together.

I heard it was a prank for some movie or documentary that he has coming out. He was holding back a laugh..

I was hooting watching it..
Maybe something is up..

I think it's a set up for a new role. Who but an actor could pull off that demeanor? He can be anybody he wants because he has the acting skill to pull it off.

But, truthfully, that odd Jauquin we saw could be just any ole guy walking down the street. It's just that we see him in the context of being an actor, rather than an ordinary unremarkable looking guy that we see everyday.
