So do you pass out the candy or let them choose?

OK, sorry for the not so exciting post, I'm bored, not a lot of kids, so I always let the kids take their own candy, but I noticed my neighbor throws a piece of candy into each bag, so which do you do?

I get the candy and put it into their bags. I'm a germ freak and am worried about one sick child spreading his/her germs to all the others, and me, so nobody touches inside the box but me!

I might ask them what they'd like and give them a choice, but I'm still the one that gets it out for them.

We pass it out, and the kids not in costume get rocks or miscellaneous doodads from the junk drawer :p:eek: TRICKS or treats, right? No costume, no effort, no candy. It's easier to pass off the non-candy if you are are the one putting in it their bags.

Stebby, never thought of that angle! And of course now I am.

Nan, another passer, I'm starting to think I have been doing this wrong :p. And btw, I like the philosophy! Rocks, that's funny

We hand out the candy. But tonight while out with the kids I noticed people doing both. But my two year old nephew prefers for you to hand him his candy so he can put it in his pumpkin.

We buy a bag of assorted candies (lollipops, jaw breakers, airheads, etc) and gum. Everything in the bag is small in size so we just grab a small handful and toss it into the kids' bags so they get a little bit of everything! :)

The ones who are too young to tell me what they want are getting boxes of organic raisins (followed by heartfelt "thank yous" from the parents standing behind them). The rest are getting what they choose from among packs of apple slices, boxes of raisins, granola bars, M&Ms and Hershey bars. Amazing, but the apple slices and granola bars are going fast.

So since I posted this, we have not had any more trick or treaters, this is my first Halloween in this neighborhood, I guess, they are just not that into it. Which honestly I'm OK with, we also did not have any of the Devil's Night nonsense either. So in total, I had 3 rings! Now I have this bowl of candy, Walgreens does let you return unopened bags, so 1 can go back, but guess I should have only opened 1. I bought stuff that doesn't appeal to me, but DH has still managed to eat more than I handed out, haha.

I pass out the candy, but I don't get very many kids. This year I answered the door once, at about 6:10 pm. There were 6 little ones and their moms stood near the street. Two of them got to the door first, and my dog came to the door, barked, and the other 4 kids turned around and ran back to their moms!!! It was so funny, I wish I'd had a video camera to capture it.

I had to shut the door, go out onto the porch and wave them back to me. They all returned for their candy, but one of them cried the entire time.:(

My doggie is a huge yellow lab who wouldn't hurt a flea, but his bark is ferocious and he sure scared the crap out of those kids!!!

They were the only kids I had all night. They probably spread the word not to come here!!!:)

Stebby makes a good point about germs. I'm not passing any out this time because I live in an apartment complex and in past years have not gotten very many kids come through. But in the past I've passed it out and let them get thier own.

I assume that the kids are going to houses more is why they don't go around in apartment complexes, so go figure. I know in the mall today kids were trick or treating, it was really cute :)

I give the kids candy in their bags, because we give out more than one piece. It seems like if you let them pick, they only take one piece. So I give them two or three different types of candy. I think the best part of Halloween (at least for me), was going home and trading candy with my brother!

We got quite a few kids this year, even though it was pretty cold, but we had a blast. I love seeing the costumes, and I love the new parents who bring their babies out!! The kids have no idea what's going on, but the parents are soo excited to have their first Halloween :)

Nicole, I forgot about trading candy with my brothers until I read your post. That WAS the best part of Halloween. Thank you for that happy memory!

I definitely pass out the candy. We didn't have a ton of kids here last night either. I now have an extreme surplus of candy. The busiest Halloween we had here in Monument was when it was snowy & icy outside. Seems when it's nice outside, the kids dont' come out in droves. Of course, the kiddos are also getting older as well. It was such a beautiful Fall eve for Trick or Treating (my son was ALSO a Ninja!! Seemed to be the costume du jour this year). Very cool, crispt mountain air filled with the awesome scent of fireplaces burning in the background. We woke this morning with a beautiful dusting of snow!! Ahhhhhh! I LOVE the changing seasons - ESPECIALLY FALL!!!!

We only had 5 kids show up the whole evening! :(

Usually we have 25 or 30 kids. It was very cold and windy in Toronto this year - no snow or ice, but a chilling cold that goes right through you. My DH and DD said they didn't see very many people out, and DD came back with a TON of candy after trick-or-treating for an hour. I think people were giving out handfuls of candy (as I was). She was pretty much frozen by the time she got home and had to be thawed out in the bathtub.

Seems like it was a slow night across the board! I didn't know it until speaking to a neighbor, but turns out, my community just does not get many kids coming around. I was all set to just hand out huge handfuls to the next group, but there was no next group! DH took it out of the house, he and his friends ate the rest of it golfing.

I pass them out. I buy a big variety of candy, and if I let them choose, they want more. I usually hand out 3 pieces per child. Our neighborhood gets a lot of trick or treaters. We had 200+. I turned off the lights at 9:00PM because I ran out of candy.

Wow, you have polite kids in your neighborhood. When I have let the kids pick out their own, they tried to take handfuls. So now I do the picking.
