snap, crackle, pop

I was doing CTX UB last night. When it came time to do the close dumb bell presses for the triceps, I noticed a lot of popping going on in both shoulder joints. It doesn't hurt, but feels sort of uncomfortable and hearing it kind of gives me the same sensation some folks get with nails scraping on a chalk board.

If you experience joint popping and cracking on an exercise, should you stop? Even though it's not necessarily hurting? I have a lot of popping in my knees, too, particularly on lunges. Again, no pain - just noise and an uncomfortable feeling. I've had surgery on one knee, and occasionally it will give a little painful twinge - I always stop what I'm doing when that happens.

Thoughts from anyone?

Hi Angela,

I have trouble with chest press. My joint on the right side does some weird things that gross me out. Like you, it does not hurt, but it bothers me just to feel it. I do keep performing the exercise since it does not hurt and would like to see what others think about this.

I cannot believe this topic just came up again :) I just posted on this same subject under "open discussion."

My body use to make noises as well, but I found that the noises stopped after adding a glucosamine-chondroitin supplement. I would hear sounds from my knees, elbows and shoulders, but after adding the supplement, in 3-6 weeks the noises were gone.
Glucosamine-chondroitin offers joint/cartiledge support. I found it helpful for me.

Joints are lubricated by a liquid sac called the bursae. An air bubble in that liquid might cause popping. If the sac beccomes inflamed you develop a condition called bursitis. IT's painful so the fact that you aren't experiencing pain is a good indicator that it isn't a problem. However, it could be a sign of instability so be careful and listen to your body!
