Snack foods

Hi all,

I'm trying to add more snacking to my daily regimen. I normally have an apple and a banana as a snack each day because they are tasty and simple to keep at my desk. I try to snack throughout the day so that don't get hungry, and overall I take in around 1800/1900 cals a day. Now, however, I think I may need to stock up on some snacks that are higher in protien. I've read that protien stays in the bloodstream longer and can keep you from feeling hungry or having cravings for a longer period of time. I also think that I generally do not get enough protien and fiber in my diet. Anyone have any suggestions for snack foods with more of these things in it?

Hi Lizzie!

My favorite protein sources: hard-boiled egg whites, peanut butter & apple or whole wheat bread, low-sodium/hi-fiber bean soup cups, low-fat cheese, low-fat yogurt, low-sodium turkey.

You're right about eating small amounts of protein throughout the day. Keeps you more satisfied and keeps blood sugar from dropping so fast

hi lizzie, cottage cheese is a favorite of mine. if i am having a sweet tooth day i will add crushed pineapple or i will buy those cottage cheese doubles with fruit already added. you kill two birds with one stone.

I love the Genisoy Soy Nuts and Soy Crisps, turkey jerky, balance bars, and zone bars. If I have time I enjoy cottage cheese with various fruits (banana, berries, apple, pineapple, etc.) Lunch meat roll ups with lunch meat, low fat salami, cream cheese and an artichoke heart in the center.

Mmmmm now I'm getting hungry...

Thanks for your suggestions guys! I have never mixed fruit w/cottage cheese before, that's quite interesting. I love both so why not mix 'em? And holy cow apples with peanut butter. I just tried it and that is darn good stuff. ;-)

Raw almonds, walnuts, brazil nuts, sunflower seeds, pumpkin seeds, pecans, cashews. Just put about a quarter cup of whatever you like (mix in some dry fruit also if you want) in a ziploc bag or old yogurt container and take them to work. They are very satisfying, have good fat, fiber and protein, and vitamins. Another good light snack is a cup of tea or coffee with lots of soy or skim milk in it. Also 100% whole wheat graham crackers, like Midel or Hain brands are filling, crunchy, sweet and healthy.

While nuts are indeed high in calories, they are among the most nutritious foods out there. They are loaded with Vitamin E, an antioxident which can reduce free radical damage caused by exercise, decrease muscle soreness after a tough Cathe weight training sessin and their monounsaturated fats are good for you, lowering ldl cholesterol. Fat is not the enemy. It's your overall calorie intake which counts. I eat nuts practically daily, usually a handful which is about an ounce (200 calories) and a handful of raisins (130 calories). Fueling up with nuts will satisfy you and keep your heart healthy! Remember that combining fat, protein and carbohydrate will keep you full and satisfied, less like to crave junk food. Definitely a part of a healthy clean diet!

Hi Lizzie,
I agree with Ideangelo about the fruit and cottage cheese. I have a serious sweet tooth, so this helps! I also like Luna bars, have you tried those? They're around 180 calories apiece (I think 10g of soy protein) and have some really good flavors--nutz over chocolate and chai tea are my favorites. I heard they have a chocolate mint and chocolate caramel now, but my grocery store doesn't carry them yet!

LAST EDITED ON Feb-24-02 AT 08:11PM (Est)[p]I have a hard time with my total caloric intake and adding nuts! I like them so much that it's hard to eat just 200 calories' worth! But I didn't know they could help with muscle soreness so I'll reconsider them. I have some in my freezer right now.
