Slide and Glide Disks

Swimmer

Cathlete
I'm getting back into doing Cathe workouts after about a ten-year hiatus, during which I focused on primarily cycling and swimming. I used to own all of Cathe's workouts back in the olden days (VHS and her initial DVDs!). In any event, I'm happy to be back. :)

I'm reluctant to purchase any of the newer workouts where Cathe uses the disks. Being a month away from entering the Dead Zone of life (haha---turning 50), I don't want to risk an injury. My workout space is carpeted.

Questions:
1) Are the disks safe?
2) Are there modifications you can do if you opt not to use the disks?

Thanks!

Hi Swimmer! I am 51 and love the disks and use them with no modifications. I have wood floors not carpet so not sure if this makes a difference other than I use the felt covers for them. They are easy on the joints and fun to use while still giving you a great workout!

Cathe specifically uses the discs as a lower impact option, so hopefully you won't have any problems using them. They take a few attempts to feel comfortable; I use mine on carpet all the time with no problems.

Plus my lower body leans out nicely when I do an LIS rotation.

Hopefully you'll give them a try and find that you like them.

Hi Swimmer! Welcome back indoors. :)

Another vote for the discs here (I'm 48). I use them on carpet...just shine the bottoms with a little Pledge and they glide like nobody's business (seriously, be careful, because once polished they're slippery, but oh the workout you get from controlling them!)

As for injuries, if there's any move where I feel more comfortable off the discs, I just do it off the discs. It's obvious for most of the moves what the modification is. Many moves, however, are more challenging with the discs, such as mountain climbers, so they're a good thing!

FYI, I love Cathe's discs, but they didn't come out until a year or two after she first used them in her videos. I didn't like using paper plates (although at that time I wasn't on carpeting), but loved using furniture movers (like the Moving Men brand)...still use them sometimes!

Cathe has some fantastic new workouts...hope you enjoy them!

Thanks so much for the responses. :):):):):) I'll go ahead and take the plunge!

This morning, I did Lo Impact Step (love that "new" one) and Power Hour. Whew, I forgot about PH's burn factor and went too heavy for chest. :p I've been doing my own "dry land" (strength) work but doing PH made me appreciate having Cathe's form pointers. I will dig out the rest of my older Cathe strength DVDs and primarily use those from now on. Maybe I'll invest in the Gym workouts next.

Thank goodness relearning Cathe's classic steps workouts has been easier than I expected.
