September 11 - Remembered! What were you doing?

DH and I had just (the night before) driven into Columbus Georgia for our first assignment in the Army together at Fort Benning. We were eating breakfast at the hotel when the first plane hit. They were showing the towers on the Today show and I was eating oatmeal when the 2nd plane hit. We immediately drove on post to the housing office to get our information. As we were leaving, we noticed the line to get on post was miles and miles long. People were telling us how it took them 6-7 HOURS to get to work that day. Later, when I talked to my parents on the phone, my dad told me that my first boyfriend was working in the towers. He did survive but it was really surreal.

I was preparing for my flight out to California the next morning for my cousin's wedding when I saw it on TV. Needless to say I missed the wedding. It was very surreal day.

Hey, Jean! I was at a store buying Christmas gifts for my kids and I overheard someone on their cell phone: "What?! A plan hit one of the Towers?!" I left and went to work - we put on the news and watched in horror as the Pentagon was hit. I could see the smoke from my office window...

We were immediately shut down and I left to get my daughter, whose school is next to a military installation. I was so scared.

We went home and watched the coverage on TV. I was stunned, it just seemed surreal. After a while I went to my little meditation space and prayed (and cried) for all of those people and their families, and counted my blessings I had my family safely with me.

<<<sigh>>> It was a rough day. I'd like to enjoy today, but it's gloomy and rainy. No matter!!!

Amen Jean!!! I was also working out with my BF at home, not Cathe unfortunately I hadn't heard of her yet then. Well we were doing our workout and my DH called from work asking if I was watching the news, he was listening to Howard Stern at work who i don't care for and he said that Howard was saying the Twin towers were on fire, well I was skeptical, like "Yeah right, from Howard Stern", so we finished our workout and I turned the TV on MSNBC and sure enough, we just stood there staring at the tv for like a half hour, then finally actually sat down, just shocked!! I cried for days and the first plane I did see after they let them fly again about scared me to death!! We need to always keep this fresh in our memories and remember those people who lost their lives that awful day. Sandy

I had just finished my workout and sat in front of the tv to play with my 3 year old and I hear Charlie Gibson say that there was smoke coming from Tower one and they were switching to live feeds. I removed my son from the room and sat there and watched the whole horrific event unfold from the second plane hitting the second tower to the pentagon to the shots of the third plane crashing in the field. I remeber my sister was in town staying with my parents( my BIL is an officer in the Navy and was currently in the middle east). I called her immediately as she was unaware of the events and tried to make contact with my BIL. I also remember how sad I was for all those lost lives and broken families who never got to say goodbye. I also remember crying alot with my sister knowning this meant my DH(National Guardsmen) and my BIL were going to war.

I was actually at home when the towers were struck, as I was going in late that day. I was watching the coverage on tv when the second plane hit and saw it and then heard the explosion all the way in Park Slope, Brooklyn. Yet, I still went in to the city. My train got delayed on the Manhattan Bridge, so we sat there for a few minutes and watched the buildings burn. By the time I got to work, the first tower had collapsed. Everyone was evacuated from our building in Midtown, so we milled around on the street for a while. Everyone sort of jumped when the fighter jets went screaming overhead. Eventually I went home - had to walk because the city was totally shut down - 8 miles!! What amazed me most was how incredibly quiet the city was that day (other than sirens) and the days following, despite the volume of people and cars. Car horns were silent. It's never been that quiet here before or since.

I was 8 months pregnant with my first and had jusy left my ob's office after my weekly checkup, when I got in the car and turned on the radio and heard the news. I then went home and turned on the TV and watch with my BIL who was at my house building my patio at the time.

I was in college and remember staying up late studying for my first test of the semester the next morning. I woke up the next morning and turned on the news and was pretty much glued to the TV all day long. I do remember driving to school to see if there even was the test that day since no one at school answered any phones - the whole city was like a ghost town. No one was out, highways and streets were empty.

It's kinda creepy, I now work in the "World Trade Center" here in my city.

I was also 8 months pregnant with my first baby and came into work. I was a claims adjuster for a auto insurance company and didn't really pay attention to what the lady in the next cube was talking about. It was pretty surreal that this was really happening. Our office was pretty slow that day and we all said if someone calls in worrying about their car or claim we were going to get so angry with them! No one did.

I was sitting at my desk in Midtown Manhattan when I got a phone call from a woman who was laid off on September 10th telling me that a plane hit the WTC - I first thought it was an accident - then she called me back when the second plane hit and I knew it was more than that. We were told to walk down to the lobby into the cafeteria and then told to evacuate the building - I work for a big banking corporation in Manhattan. I hooked up with my daughter and we walked over the 59th bridge into Queens. We saw the burning and smoke as we walked over the bridge and it was hot and sunny. maryann

My DH is in the Navy. We were stationed at Roosevelt Roads Naval Station, Puerto Rico. My mom called me, and my DH called from work to tell me to look at the news. I only had my DD then. I remember picking her up at school early which was on base. All parents were picking up their kids from school, gassing up the cars, went to the commissary to shop really qick, because by that afternoon, the base had shut down, completely for about 3 days. There was no school, everything was closed. We could not leave the base.

I was at work. I went to work early every day so I could get home early. Several of my co-workers were also there. I started being aware of unrest around me, so went into the break room that had CNN on it. We all just stood there, staring, and talking. We watched the plane go into the second tower. A couple of us said in unison, "there's another ONE!" We all just stood and stared. Finally, the senior person at our office sent us all home around lunch time. None of us had left the break room since we'd entered.

I remember driving home and being scared of the sky.

God bless this country and the people.

I was pregnant, too- 3 months along. Since I was experiencing morning sickness and fatigue, I slept in that morning. I was trying to get down de-caf tea and toast, when someone called and told me to turn on the tv. I live about 30 min. from NYC. I ended up going in to work, anyways. Most of my appointments cancelled that day (hairstylist), but I was really surprised at how many people were still walking in looking to get their hair cut! Alot of people in my area worked in the city. There was alot of panic because of that. Such a sad day.

I was at work and heard it on the radio. When the plane hit the Pentagon I said, "The world is ending!" We watched the coverage on a small portable TV I had. It was literally like watching a movie - it was hard to get it through my head that it was real.

I was getting ready for work. I had an 11-7 shift at a therapeutic group home in Baltimore. I always watched the news for a bit before work and I remember just sitting on the couch trying to wrap my head around what was going on. Needless to say we had a lot of therapeutic groups from that day forward to help both the kids and the employees begin to cope. It felt so surreal.

I was getting ready to head to the airport for a business trip. I remember just sitting on the bed watching in complete shock. Two months later when I finally made that trip I was on pins & needles the whole time.

My oldest son's first day of preschool. We are on the west coast so were asleep when it happened...then my friend called to see if we were still going to preschool because of the planes being flown into the WTC, we thought she was crazy. Tried to keep the TV off so my 3 yo wouldn't be scared, but it was hard not to. Wow.
