DH and I are going to Santa Fe for 4 days. We haven't been there before and we have some ideas of things to do. I was wondering if anyone has been there before or lives there and can recommend some of the great things to do in Santa Fe.

TIA

Karin -

I used to live in Albuquerque, and spent a lot of time in Santa Fe. What do you like to do? There's wonderful hiking and mountain biking trails. You have fabulous galleries, the Georgia O'Keefe museum, shopping... Taos is an easy drive (about an hour) from Santa Fe, and the Acoma Pueblo (which I highly recommend) is about 2 hours. The food is good, too. Tell me what you like to do, and I can refine this a bit more. I love New Mexico and miss it greatly.

I used to live half an hour from Santa Fe. If you stay in the old town section it is nicer, there are nicer things to see, and it is not dirty like the rest of Santa Fe is (okay, so I'm not a big fan of S.F.). You can go to the plaza in old town and just walk around that area, it is quite nice. Canyon Road has a lot of artists and things along there if I remember correctly and that place might be a neat area to check out. Basically if you stay on the western side of St. Francis Drive (the main north-south road) you will see the neater areas. But there are lots of places to eat along Cerillos Road (the main east-west road) and cheap places to shop.

Oh, speaking of shopping, there is a really cool store called the Jackalope (http://www.jackalope.com/) on Cerillos Road, east of St. Francis Dr. It is on the north side of the street and has all SORTS of cool stuff in it, from pottery, to woven clothes, etc. I would recommend checking it out!

I second the recommendation on Jackalope! It's a really cool place to browse through.

I would definitely try to get up into the mountains if you can and Bandelier National Monument (about 1 hour to the north and west of SF) has some beautiful ruins.

The Plaza area is fun. Check out the Indian jewelry @ the Palace of the Governors as well as the Georgia O'Keefe museum. My favorite restaurant downtown (Plaza) is the Shed on E. Palace Ave., but be prepared for a wait.

Karin, I don't have any recommendations but I just want to say have a great time in Santa Fe. I haven't seen you in awhile. Hope all is great with you. How is your knee? :)

My husband and I were in Santa Fe a few years ago and loved it. In fact we saw Tim McGraw and Faith Hill walking around in the plaza area while we were there...very cool!

That is funny...we bumped into Rachel Ray shopping in Banana Republic while we were there...before she hit the BIG time (when she only had 1 show). Although, I wasn't impressed with her attitude, I certainly LOVED my stay in town!

I think I would have much rather seen Faith & Tim!

xoxo, Denise :)

Thanks everyone.

Christine, DH and I like to road bike and hike. We also like museums, history, eating, etc... Sounds like Santa Fe is the perfect place for all of this. Also, I really want to go to Bandelier National Monument because I heard that is just amazing.

Any ideas that you have would be great.

PS - I'm still recovering from knee surgery so while we would like to hike I would rather something that isn't too steep.

We vacationed a week in that area a few years back. You have many good suggestions here. Such beautiful country. You'll be able to do Bandelier I think. The food is fantastic -- if you like spicy, hot New Mexico food -- I was in heaven. Be sure to post some photos when you're back -- my camera wasn't working, unbeknowest to me, so I don't have photos. Would love to see some and remenise. Deb

Karin, Bandalier is right by where I used to live (Los Alamos/White Rock). To get there from Santa Fe, you take St. Francis Drive south (away from I-25) and drive for about 15-20 minutes. When you reach Pojoaque, take the Los Alamos exit...it exits to the right and goes under the bridge to the left. Stay on that road and take it up the hill (another 15 minutes maybe?). You'll pass over the Rio Grande River before you reach the hill but be careful or you'll miss it...most years it looks like you can walk across the river and barely get your ankles wet! When the road divides at the top of the hill, take the right split towards White Rock/Bandalier. Continue to stay on that road until you reach Bandalier. You will pass by/thru White Rock, which is a bedroom community for Los Alamos. It has two whopping stop lights! LOL

What a small world!! I moved there in November of my sophomore year in H.S. and graduated in 1992. And I promptly moved away as fast as I could ;-) I had a very difficult time fitting in when I moved there and I was used to moving to miltary towns as my dad was in the military. L.A. was the furthest thing from a military community that you could get...so it was hard moving there as a teen.

I was born & raised there - graduated HS in 1984. Everybody thought I'd move back there for sure (geek), but now I live in ABQ (after stints in CO and CT) and like it much better.

I went to college in Boulder - if I could have found a job there I'd still be there... My brother is in Denver, though so at least I can visit.
