San Antonio

I'm traveling to San Antonio for business in mid-January. Can anyone recommend any non-touristy restaurants, clubs, bars, etc. in the area?

I'll be staying at a hotel on the River Walk (of course), but I'm definitely game on getting out of that area. I'll have only evenings for my free time. No time to head out to Austin, unfortuntely.

Any suggestions will be appreciated!

Hi there;

San Antonio is a fun town to visit. I'm sure more locals will chime in, but here's what I remember:

La Fogata, 2427 Vance Jackson Rd , San Antonio. VERY STRONG MARGARITAS. And delicious & unusual Mexican and Tex-Mex. I had some sort of relleno with a creamy pecan sauce there once...it was dreamy. Other local faves:

El Jarro de Arturo, 13421 San Pedro Ave
Mi Tierra, 218 Produce Row (nice respectable breakfast pastry and/or lunch spot; equally nice late-night snack spot).

If you're vegetarian, it won't matter to you, but the Smokehouse (3306 Roland Rd ) is pretty popular for BBQ. If you are looking for (very!) casual atmosphere or just want to pick something up to take out, Rudy's Country Store ("The Worst Barbeque in Texas!") is a fun choice. It may be attached to a gas station, but do not be alarmed! I haven't had barbeque since I became vegan, but I have memories of Rudy's "extra lean" with their special sauce that keep me up at night. Fortunately I live in Maryland now!

For breakfast, may I suggest the Magnolia Pancake Haus? It's at 13444 West Avenue.

Have a great trip!

I lived there for 7 years but that was a few years ago and good restaraunts change in that time. One place that was my favorite was La Margarita Restaurant in Market Square downtown. Talk about excellent Mexican food and ethnicity. I'm in Ohio now but have not tasted authentic Mexican food like that since then. Enjoy!

I want to very much, but I've checked what time it's open and it just won't fit. :-(

I'll be stuck in a conference room until 5:30 for two days. I'm arriving at 7:30 PM on Tuesday and leaving at 8 AM on Friday.

That's the bad thing about traveling for business; you don't really get to see the place you visit!

Thanks for the restaurant advice, everyone! I'm trying to see if there's any good live music while I'm there!
