S&H: subsitute barbell and dumbbells

Cathlete
Hello,

I have just purchased the S&H series. Looking through the leg workout, I noticed that Cathe uses a 40lb dumbbell for the plie squats and for the chest press in Chest & Back. I was wondering if I could use a barbell for these exercises instead of dumbbells as I don't have dumbbells that are so heavy. Although, I do think that Cathe using the dumbbell for the legs look so much better.

I don't know if this will answer your question, but I substitute dumbells for a weighted barbell in a lot of videos. My barbell is the kind that takes longer to change plate weights, and I don't like to pause that much time between exercises, so I usually just load it with the weight I'm likely to use most for that particular video, and use dumbells for the others. It seems to be working for me just fine!

Carol,

Do you do S&H? I've wondered the same question about the 40 lb dumbbell. Would two 20 pounders work as well as the 40 lb weight? The answer to this may also help with the original quesiton on this thread.

Thanks!

I would think that using two 20 pounders would work just fine for the plié squat segment (you could also hold them on your thigh/hip tie-in if it's too uncomfortable to hold them between your legs, or if this position causes you to round forward).

Going back to the original question: for the chest exercise, I haven't done S&H for a while, so I'm not sure what exercise is being refered to. Is it pullovers? I'd be afraid that using two 20# weights there would lead to a less-than-stable grip, and a risk of dropping one of the bells.

Yes I have the S&H series, but I use a 35# barbell for the squats and lunges in that one. I have, however, used dumbells in other tapes for squats and lunges, and they've worked just fine. If it's not comfortable putting them on your shoulders, you can just hold them in your hands. Sometimes I do that when my shoulders hurt from having the barbell on them in a previous exercise. Hope this helps!

I’ve been told that whenever possible, use dumbbells instead of a barbell because with a barbell, your dominant side will take over to perform most of the work during the last few reps. I went out and bought a 40# db for the plies, but I would think two 20#ers resting on the crook of the hip would work. I usually use (2) 25# dumbbells for the chest presses as I really want to focus on getting my left side as strong as my right. HTH!
