S&H- boring?

Cathlete
I was thinking of getting the S&H series, since I like doing tougher Cathe weight tapes and am tired of doing MIS and PS; plus, I want to get 'cut.' But someone mentioned the tapes are boring- does anyone agree? I've never had a boring Cathe tape yet!

Thanks!

Boring? not at all !

Who said these tapes are boring??? Just kidding... but I don't find them at all boring. I love S&H!! I totally love focusing on my form and feeling my muscles burning and driving those weights... I totally love the feeling. I feel super strong and I use mental imagry to really focus on each muscle I'm working. Plus Cathe is so motivating and she has a great sense of humor. Besides, I'm getting so cut & strong from S&H & this is motivating in and of itself

Boring? No way! Try this series, it will get you the results you're looking for

RE: Boring? not at all !

I love the S&H series and I think that they are some of Cathe's finest work!!! Out of all her strength workouts, they are my favorite (and considering how many great strength routines she has on video, that's saying alot.)

These tapes are in no way boring, if anything very challenging. I have been doing a six week rotation and have seen incredible results with this series. You do have to concentrate a lot more and focus on your form the entire time. I would say these tapes are a masterpiece. They are a lot different then say MIS and Power Hour in that those are endurance tapes and S&H focuses on muscle building. My suggestion is to only do them, as Cathe says, for a 3 week rotation, that way you won't get bored and can stay focused. Amy Jo

I wouldn't say it is boring, but I didn't leave me feeling as strong and empowered (I know that sounds corny) as heavy lifting usually does. I wrote the following in the earlier S& H review thread:

**************************************************************

I have only done the chest/back & legs/shoulders tapes so far. (Unbelievable since I was so psyched to get them, but I went a away for a few days and then wanted to get in a total body workout after the time off).

Anyhow... I liked the chest, but was disappointed with the back routine. It didn't feel "powerful" enough. And I really didn't feel like the pullovers did anything for my back. I did a few sets of reverse flys 9at about a 20 degree angle) after the back tape to feel like I did something.

As for the legs... I must go heavier next time because my heart rate was not up at all. Also, I am not crazy about stationary lunges. My hips are not perfectly lined up (structural problem, thankfully not visible) and this move just doesn't feel right. I am going to try and subsitute something else. Not sure if one can do a back lunge this slow. Maybe a step up??

And the shoulders weren't so great either. I felt something funny as I did the front raise at an incline. But did like the hammer, then rotate variation. Why call it "heavy" if you can't go heavy?

My verdict so far... disappointed, but will try it again. I still have hope that I will grow to like this series. I have always enjoyed lifting heavy on my own. (Plus I haven't done bis and tris yet.)

I am cut now and it it NOT due to Slow and Heavy or Pure Strength. In fact, I am now almost too muscular! Genetics play a part in that. My legs tend to bulk quickly -- while my abs are my nemesis!

It has to do with a clean diet and rotating between lots of cardio and lots of weights. I like videos where I get both types of exercise in one -- like Body Max, CTX, Firm, etc.

I think men and serious body builders would prefer the Slow and Heavy and Pure Strength workouts. As a former dancer, I crave complex choreography and fast moves that keep me challenged!

For me, I just cannot get enough of this workout...I absolutely LOVE it!!!

I've seen such a huge difference in my build since I've started doing it. I've been doing 4-week rotations with it, and usually just give myself a 2-week break from it and go right back after that.

I'm much stronger since I've started doing it. I love the deep breaths and stretching after each set.

Like I said, I cannot get enough of these! JMHO

I am an avid runner. Someone once told me they thought running was boring to which I replied it's only as boring as the runner herself! Slow and Heavy requires intense focus but it is so awesome! It's one of my favorites but not one I do that often becuase it does require such focus. It gives incredible results.
It is many things but boring it ain't!

I don't think SH is boring, but after doing the tapes a number of times, I tune out to the chatter between sets, and I admit that my mind wanders. Then I have to remind myself to focus when the next set begins if my thinking is on what I will be doing at work, what I am going to cook for dinner, people I will be seeing, etc. When I am doing Power Hour, there is just no time to daydream because I am getting my equipment ready for the next moves. I hope this helps you make a decision. SH is definitely a great weight workout--just different!

Thanks!

Thanks to all of you for your different opinions. I think I'll get them, but the key will be to just do them for a 3-4 week rotation so I don't get bored.

LAST EDITED ON Jan-03-02 AT 03:06PM (Est)[p]Isn't it funny how we all differ? I HATE HATE HATE running and Slow and Heavy and Pure Strength. If those were the only workouts available I'd be sedentary! I focus intensely on Power Hour and other strength videos I own. I will admit that Slow and Heavy has great pointers, though. And great rotator cuff and abs workouts. But IMO, the rest just doesn't even yield results. God knows I gave them a chance before I voiced my opinion.

Heck, I don't have a problem with other people working out other ways such as running and Slow and Heavy. The important thing is to find an activity you ENJOY. I don't perceive myself as better because I like kickbox, step, and floor cardio -- the dancier the better. And I prefer a faster paced weight workout like Power Hour -- which to me is a Cathe masterpiece.

I have to have high energy workouts, lots of noisy music, with choreography that challenges me to the max, etc.

But thank God for one thing -- we've all discovered the beauty of fitness! And we are in a very elite minority. I work in the field of public health and one of the Center for Disease Control's major thrusts -- even ahead of tobacco control is physical activity. Physical activity keeps a person happier, more disease free, and less likely to be obese!
And an active person of course is less likely to smoke (I am a militant nonsmoker and hate tobacco with a passion)!

I love running too

Hi Bobbi, I'm an avid runner too, and I agree with your post. I do not think running is boring at all (okay, treadmills are way boring, but running outdoors is the most interesting form of cardio to me). Anyway, the S/H leg workout has really strengthened my legs and I've been running hills so much better as a result! Have you noticed an improvement in your running? I'm doing a 10K and 5K in the next few months, so we'll see if my times improve any

Happy running,

marnie

I don't find them boring but I can't be in a rush to finish either. I think I need a lot of patience with this set. I am not used to going so slow

I wouldn't say boring but I do need to break from certain tapes and instructors to be well balanced. When I come back to them I love them all over again.I divide my videos up as much as possible because I actually start saying the dialogue. The slow Heavy is great-my muscles grew.

I love this series! The only other video I can honestly say I love is the Firm's volume 1. S&H is so different from my Firm collection and offers me the chance to actually concentrate on form and seeing how much I can lift. I still haven't been able to stop using it...it's been over a month! It's just that when the time to workout comes, a voice inside my head goes," Who cares about endurance? You want muscles dont you?" It's positively evil. So today I decided to get some cardio and went spinning (my other true love! Which I've neglected!) to alternate with S&H. I dont think S&H is boring, it's just that it requires so much concentration and THAT is hard to do. Like Cathe said,"It is so mental" then again it is called SLOOOOOOOW and HEEEAAAVYYYYYYY.Not quickie.
