Running advice please

Hi everyone

My DH came home yesterday and announced that he had registered us for a 5 km charity run/walk which is taking place this Sunday.

On the face of it it seems like a good idea, but considering that I am not a runner, and have never run 5km all at once in my life before I'm not so sure. Whilst I will only do the best I can and walk whenever I feel necessary, I was wondering if any of you regular runners could give me some advice/tips that would help me "go the distance".

Thanks

Sandra

Good luck!

I ran the NYC marathon a few years ago...and it was one of the most incredible experiences I have ever had. When I tell people that I did it...many people say that they could NEVER do it. My response is always the same...you could do it if you really wanted to!!! Anyone can. I ran along side of people with prosthetic legs and people who recently overcame cancer and it was awe-inspiring.

I didn't know how I was ever going make it 26.2 miles, but as I was training I kept thinking how black and white the decision to run is. When you are confronted with the decision to continue running or stop...simply ask yourself "do I honestly NEED to stop" or "can I go just a little further". Each time I asked myself that question, I kept saying...no, I can keep going. Soon enough (relatively speaking) the race was over and I had finished.

Also, I had friends and family there to support me, which was incredibly important. They also wrote me little inspirational notes that I kept in my running sack that I took out and read when the going got really tough.

What a great accomplishment to run a 5K. I know you can do it. Surprise yourself and run it all!!

RE: Good luck!

Sandra,

I am not a running pro and have just been running for a couple of months but I think you gave yourself the best advice. Do what you can, walk when necessary. Since it is Sunday you really have no time to train for it. Some time this week you could just go out and see how far you can go so you will have an idea on Sunday. No need to push yourself and risk an injury. Make sure you have good shoes!! There, that is my extremely nonprofessional advice!!!

Have fun!

LAST EDITED ON Sep-26-01 AT 01:57PM (Est)[p]You can do it. If you can do MIC or Imax, you can run a mere 3 miles. Just pace yourself, stay in a "talk but not sing" mode, hydrate yourself, have fun, don't try to keep up with anybody but yourself. You'll be fine, and then you'll feel so accomplished! You'll say "I'm not even a runner and I'm in such good shape I made it anyway." And definitely have good shoes, hopefully broken in ones. In fact, I'd rather run in not so perfect shoes than in brand new ones I wasn't sure of. But if you go to a good shoe store, you can probably walk out of there with new shoes you can be confident of.

RE: Good luck!

I agree completely with Mogambo. If you can do Cathe's workouts, you can run. I love to run and ran religiously for many years. Now I mix running with Cathe's cardio and strength training. I personally find MIC harder than running, even speedwork. And races are a blast. Runner's are supportive and I'll bet you'll enjoy yourself.

Of course, you don't have much time to train but I suspect since you hang out HERE, you are up to a 5K! Good luck and remember to have fun!

Peace,
Bobbi

I did it - Thank You

Just wanted to say thank you to Candor, Kelly, Mogambo and Bobbi for your kind words of encouragement - I DID IT!!

I ran the whole 5kms in about 30 minutes and really surprised myself, and when it was over I stopped by the gym and ran somemore on the treadmill. I never knew I had it in me.

Thanks again

Sandra

Good for you! You can run further than I can, that's for sure. Will you keep up the running? Sounds like you enjoy it! Anyway, just wanted to congratulate you!!!!

A 5K is a great one to start with.

Tomorrow my 9 year old son and his friend and I are going running. We are going to run about 3.1 miles. It is great fun to run with the boys

If they can do it, you can too!

Soon you will be up to a 10K (my race of choice)
