Runners - Hydration Question

Hey there runners! Any advice on the best way to hydrate on a long run? Any advice or recommendations for a certain "camel" product? I can't go more than 7-8 miles without water!! I always feel like my body can go more but I NEED WATER! How do you swing it??

I usually have DH ride his bike along with me and carry the water.

Specialty running shops also sell hydration belts. (see link below)

I also run on a bike path where I know there are drinking fountains.

You could also run a course where you pass your house at the 7th mile and have a big bottle there in your mailbox waiting for you or something....

Here's a link to a hydration belt: (so you can see what it looks like)

I always ran the long runs with water/gatorade mix in my water bottle in my hand. No one understood why it didn't drive me nuts, but I figured it was better than how nuts I'd be if I was thirsty!

I know some runners place their bottles along their long runs. I also used to run sometimes along a trail that had water at the 3.5 mile point- so out and back I'd have water at 3.5 and 10 miles. I could scope out a drinking fountain along almost all of my longer run paths!

The camel thing never turned me on- I run with a TON of equipment, (cell phone, blood sugar machine, glucose of varying forms, and insulin pump attached to my belt) so I figure the less I have attached to me, the better. I like the concept, though. I'm not one for drinking from a straw when I'm so thirsty I want to guzzle, either. I ended up with a waist pack that could hold 2 bottles, and also bought bigger bottles- 26 oz instead of the typical 20.

Hm. I don't think I've offered any actual help- just sharing my experiences! Sorry.

I have never used a "camel" product yet. I have thought about it though. Anyway I use a 25 ounce bottle with a handgrip that stretched around the bottle and you can slip your hand in it so you don't have to really "hold" the bottle. If I am going over 10 miles I would use a sports drink instead of just water. Alot of the trails and other areas around here where I run usually have access to water....:)...Carole
