Runners Checkin 05-08

Carole - yeah, hiking can be tough on the calves the first few times out, but I hike weekly, and usually do more miles. *shrugs* Oh well - I know I worked them this weekend! That's all that matters.

Can someone tell me what this means. Lately I really am just winging my runs alternating between a long run, tempo, and then an interval here and there. Well, with my next 5k in two weeks I printed out Hal Higdon's Training Program and am going to work on this for the next two weeks and hopefully shave some time off my run.

Now the Question. What does this mean when they say run a 8x400 mile pace or a 6x200 mile pace. How long am I suppose to run during this and what speed does that mean I should do. I know you all can help me. Thanks so much. I'm just a little confused.

Hi Karen,
I know the other runners here with more race experience can explain this to you better than I can, but here's what I understand. 8x400 means you run 400 meters (or about .25 miles) at your speediest pace (?here's where I get lost about lactate threshold, anaerobic pace, ?? - so I boil it down to "as fast as I can and then faster than that.." and then recover for about 200 meters -- or until your heart rate recovers. Do this 8 times. So 8 = number of times to repeat
and 400 = the length in meters of the interval.

Sometimes, if I do this on the treadmill, I will put in I-Max and find that the interval times of I-Max sometime synchronize well. Other times, I hit pause.

-- when you go to the hal higdon site at one link you can click for "preview" of the program and there is some short explanations of different types of runs

--at runnersworld.com there is now a smart runner program that will spit out a training program for you similar to the Hal Higdon program. Since you start out entering your race pace, the program gives you a general idea of pace. I had to change the numbers a lot until the pace fit closer to what I could actually run.

Hope this helps.

Barb that does help. I appreciate the explantion. So what I need to do is try and figure out what time I want to run the next 5K and go from there. I'm glad you told me that 8 means the number of time to do this. I couldn't for the life of me figue out how long this workout should be. Thanks!!!
