Runner's Check-in Mon Apr 10

Hi Carole,

Im always right behind ya!:) I guess that means...I have your back:+ :+
Well, we were gonna run outside again today but its a little cold and wet.I think I would rather do HSC and a run.I really don't want to go to hard with the running b/c it won't take long for my knees to feel the pain!

Whats everyone else do'in?
Lori:)

Hello,

Didn't get to check-in over the weekend. But I did 4.25 miles on Saturday and I think about a 2.5 mile run yesterday. It was so gorgeous out that I just had to go for a run outside. I don't have a pedometer, but DH does the same run and says it's about 2.5. It was a great running weekend for me as a newbie to the sport.

Today, I did the Step/HiLo premix from Step Blast/SJP.

Later,
Jen

Hey! I am doing four miles today, also, and then I am doing my own little made up bootcamp for upper body and abs.

I did nine and half miles on Friday up and down hills against wind (on my vacation, doesn't it sound more like punishment?) and my knees felt bruised for a couple of days. They had never really hurt like this before, so is it possible to bruise your joints??? Does it sound crazy? I was thinking that going downhill cannot be good for my knees. Any thoughts?

Missy

I have done about 80 miles in them since I got them. Does the impact of going downhill have anything to do with it? I am not used to running downhill at all - I never had before this Friday.

Missy

It could be from running downhill....that usually causes shinsplints too sometimes...try to stay aways from hills and see if its better...:)

Thank you so much Carole! Luckily here in Indiana it is VERY flat so it won't be a problem avoiding hills :) . We spent a week at the dunes and the hills aren't long, but they are just steep enough to make you feel it. Ouch! I feel soooooooo much better today, thank goodness!!!

Question: Does anyone have a good recipe for a post-run smoothie? I like anything, so all ideas are welcome:)

Thanks,
Jen

Hi!
Thanks Carole for the imput with the hills. There is so much to learn from all you experienced running people :)

I just finished a 6 mile run and a good stretch. After I digest my smoothie that I am sipping, I will do PS Chest.

My next goal is to to keep a yoga session in once per week.

ETA: I do a similar smoothie to Carole, but instead of protein powder, I use 6 oz. of light silken tofu.

Jen, my smoothie is usually the same as follows: 2 cups assorted fruit, 3/4 cup soymilk, 1 scoop vanilla rice protein powder, and 1 T ground flaxseed...:)

Hello,

I haven't checked in in a few days; I've been struggling with a cold/cough, and my runs have really been suffering. I tried to run both Saturday and Sunday but couldn't go much farther than a mile and a half before I had to stop and walk. This is so frustrating! My half-marathon is less than four weeks away, and I feel like my distance base is wasting away. Do any of you ever struggle with this kind of thing? How do you deal with it? Do you know how quickly you lose endurance? My brain wants to go for a run today, but I think my body is going to say no again. Ugh.

Missy, where in Indiana are you? I'm from Lafayette/West Lafayette but moved to Wisconsin almost two years ago. We're thinking about moving to Indianapolis.

Take care,

Ellen

Hi Ladies..

Yesterday I did 9-miles. Had a good run and felt pretty good...had to stop though and get ready for church.

Today I'm not going to run. I'll be doing the elliptical and some upper body later.

Have great runs!!

Hi Ladies -

I didn't check in this weekend, but on Sunday DH and I did our run/walk around the park, and I finished the 2.9 mile loop in 30 minutes! I thought I was going at a 11 min/mile pace, but turns out I was going faster than that. The "track" at the park must be much bigger than a 1/4 mile. We couldn't believe it, since I finished in 30 min walking 6 of those minutes, and DH finished in 26 min walking 6 of those minutes PLUS he usually turns around and walks back to me so we can chat while we are walking so he would have finished a lot earlier. We need to find a real track and figure out what our pace is. This morning I did a 30 min run/walk around the neighborhood bumping it up this week to 9 min running/ 2 min walking twice, then 8 min running. I did 3 miles in 30 minutes, walking for 4 of those minutes. So I must be going a little faster than a 10 min mile. And it didn't feel that hard, I could have carried on a conversation during it. I felt like I could have just run the whole 30 min without walking, but I guess I shouldn't push it too much since I am just starting out.

Ellen, I live just north of Indy! I moved to Indianapolis when I was eight and lived there until we moved next to Zionsville about just over 2 years ago. Are you thinking of moving for job reasons? There is a lot of growth around the city. It doesn't look like it did even ten years ago. Hey, and my brother goes to Purdue! It's a small world, huh? :)

Hi there, I feel I can contribute some insight as to running hills.
The elevation where I live is 5-6000 ft. (northern Arizona) and I run hills constantly. Yesterday I ran 10 miles ( a loop around my neighborhood) with plenty of booty kicking wonderful hills. Running
downhill is in many ways more difficult than going up. People will
naturally tend to lengthen their stride and lean back, essentially
"putting on the brakes" ... you really need to avoid doing this as it puts tremendous stress on the heels and particularly the knees. You need to shorten your stride and continue to lean forward. This isn't too difficult with a gradual mild downslope but when it gets steep a good way to tackle it is to zigzag your way down. This not only keeps your form good and prevents injury, it's also fun!
Try it.

Hello from Cali-RAIN-ia!

Great runs so far today! No running for me today though. It was SJP this morning instead and maybe I might squeeze in a 30 minute jaunt on the treadmill tonight. Don't want to hurt the hip!

Speaking of hurting hips, I hope you are doing better Shelley. I know what it feels like to be sidelined while marathon training and then trying to get running again, so I'm sending ya some well wishes to help you along!

Sarah and Carole -I didn't get to check in this weekend until late last night and I just want to give you both a big HIGH FIVE for tearin' it up on those long runs over the weekend. Well, actually I'm high fiving everybody on their runs, but I know what it takes to get into a long run so here's some atta girls for ya'll and I just knew Sarah was going to come out ahead on that run! Way to go girl, you are totally ready for the pig!! :7

Have a good day everybody!!!

Thomasina
