Runner's Cehck In 05/10

Hello again-
Gayle- I forgot to say hi on my earlier post and to say that I'm so glad you are feeling better! There are so many marathon plans out there and it can be bewildering. I have the same dilemma myself in preparing for my first. One particular difficulty for me is that they are all geared around people with a 9-5 M-F schedule. My work schedule is 12 hr nights and is extremely erratic. I've just been using Hal Higdon's plan and the ones on Runners world and modifying them as needed. I'm just sure each week I get in one long run and one or two speed workouts- intervals and/or tempo runs, with rest, crosstrain or easy runs inbetween.

Hi Mattea- you sound like you had a great fun workout!!

ShellyC

*dashes into thread and waves hello to everyone*

I'm swamped today! So, I won't have time to say hi to everyone - sorry! But HI EVERYONE!!

Did PowerStrike 1 today. No run. I'll take a nice morning run with Tucker tomorrow. He's funny. He's gone from sneaking around the garage when I get ready for a run hoping I don't notice him (with his big furry butt, that's tough), to jumping around and whining in excitment as I tie my shoes. He even knows the difference between my running shoes and my aerobic shoes. So, we're both getting in shape and losing weight with this running routine! :) Can't beat that! (For those who don't know, I thought I'd better clarify - Tucker is a dog - an Aussie to be exact).

Thanks for the continued inspiration. For the first time in my life I'm feeling that not only is a Half Marathon totally doable - I might actually survive without too much pain!

I'm swamped to so just waving a quick hello to everyone and want to say to Christine "Heck yes you can run that 1/2 with minimal pain!!!".

Did PLB, Seg 2 Core Max, 3.5 mile run (had to cut it back from 5 miles due to time contstraints)

Almost done with my St. George training schedule.\

Someone (I think it was Shelly) asked where St. George is. It's in Utah, about 2 hours from Las Vegas. It is absolutley gorgeous there and those people know how to host a marathon!!!

Elaine-I'd love to see the St. George training schedule. Oh, did I already say that? LOL

Shelly-Runner's World just had an article about marathon training and working around YOUR schedule. I'm not sure exactly which issue, but it was on eof the last 2 or 3. May be worth looking into, but it sounds like you've got yourself covered!

All this chit chat about races and marathons and training schedules. I'm all pumped up to OFFICIALY start training for my races!

Gayle

Hi Ladies!!!! Man, I love race season!! Hearing about all the upcoming 5K's, 10K's, 1/2's, Trails and already talk of Fall fulls!!! Schedules, tapers, Jeff, Hal, intervals, hill repeats...ah, I love these words!! Right now, the word I am using the most is "recovery"!!:7

Gayle, I am so glad you are feeling better!

Laura, I think that you would be fine running more miles this weekend because you are no stranger to 1/2's. Just make sure you do not over do it the days following. Do what feels right. Regardless of the miles you decide on...take 'em nice and easy! You are going to do great!

Karen, you are SO ready for a 1/2 training program! When I did mine, I roughly followed Hal Higdon. I like his because instead of saying "Run 12 miles"...it will say "Run 90 minutes"...stressing it is time on your feet that matters, not the distance. You are ready! You are already covering a lot of miles!

You guys are all doing great! I love to hear your getting out there and kicking butt! That's right...quitting is never an option! Also glad to see we have a new member to the check-in! I urge all lurkers to join us!! We don't bite...unless you bail on us to join the "I Hate Cardio" Check-in!!:p

I forgot to mention the "Post marathon recovery run" I did with the training group last night!!! Our coach had us walk a few blocks to a dead end street with no houses...it cut through a golf course. No traffic and no spectators. Once we were well hidden, we did our best to "jog". Oh, what a pathetic display!! We did walk/run intervals up and down the street for a while and then we did 1 minute run, 1 minute walk, 2 minutes run, 1 minute walk, 3 minutes run, 1 minute walk, etc. It really sucked at the time but I feel a lot better today.

Today...total rest!

Hello Ladies! You all are doing so great with your running. It is so motivating. Which makes it so hard for me to say that I will probably be MIA for a couple of weeks. As some of you know last week I was trying new running shoes to deal with some discomfort I have been having, but as of this weekend it has gotten worse. My heel hurts when I run and when I step, but is fine when I am doing everything else including weight training. So I've decided to cut back on my running for the next couple of weeks to try to give it some time to heal and then begin slowly again. I've been using Hal Higdon's training program to train for my half but I guess I need to start out a little slower again. Hopefully by the end of the month I will be able to get back to running on a continous basis again without any problems.

Have a great run today!

ShellyC- who cares 10K, 15K, no matter what K it is your doing IT , and doing it well I might add. Your going to kick some trail butt.

Mattea- I am going to give that a try the next time I do pymarids. I do think to do that but then alwys say NAh !!! I'll do it at the end and then always do something else.

Sarah- I like Hal's description on that as well. I really am considering the half in the fall. It even comes with a post race massage. AHHHHHH

Kristi- Take care of the heel.

Good Afternoon fabulous running women!

This morning I was able to get in Lowmax but I have to say, I was bored!! I don’t know, must be my rekindled love of running lately that bored me on the step. Plus, I couldn’t get my heart rate to stay up either. Oh well, a nice tempo run is on tap for tomorrow morning and if I have time, I am going to try my new BRYAN KEST yoga DVD! Yay! Yeah, after all the chatter about Bryan, I thought I would go ahead and try it out. I want to get his other power yoga series, but I started with power yoga for weight loss since I am working at getting this freaking fifteen pounds x( or so I gained since last summer off of me! I am losing the weight and inches, but man, do I have a hard time losing-very slow to come off. It has always been an issue for me, even as a teen. I have to exercise or I will gain, gain, gain. I guess it is good I like to exercise then, huh? Lol. Anyhoo, sorry for the rant…. Great job today everyone and thanks for all of your inspiration; it truly does keep me going. This last week has been tiring and a busy, busy challenge, but thanks to you all, I have had the inspiration and courage to be true to myself and “stick with my plan” and kept on exercising and eating well. YOU GUYS ROCK!!!

Gayle – Glad to hear you are better! And by the way, after I read back over the posts i missed, I wanted to say thanks for sharing the story about your mom...totally choked me up like I was reading something Sarah wrote! You are a great inspiration to your entire family, I'm sure! Good Luck with your Marathon!! I think you'll BQ too!

Karen – I agree you have plenty of time to train for a half and I also agree with Carole when she said to increase slowly so you don’t get injured. (LOL the running bug has definitely bitten you!) You are really doing well, though!!

Laura – I miss running outside early in the morning. Right now I don’t have anyone to run with in the mornings so the treadmill it is. Near my house is beautiful but not wise to run alone….lions, tigers and bears…oh my!

Kathy – I think it is great that you joined up for volleyball. It will add some cross training. I just recently took a peek at the Runners’s World smart coach schedule for the half and it is pretty decent I must say.

Barb – great job on the 7 miles! And thanks for reminding me that quitting is no option! I have been soo tired this week, but even though I had a few devilish thoughts of giving up, I didn’t! Hey, kind of like giving up chocolate….I’d give up chocolate, but I’m no quitter! LOL

Carole – I should be working at an aid station anywhere from Foresthill to the finish line during the western states, so maybe I’ll see ya! The race director will let me know all the logistics in a couple of weeks. Also, I’ve read some stuff in the Vegan thread and WOW I think that one and this one are my 2 favs now! I was going to barge into the vegan thread saying I thought Yours and Katherine’s houses would be a great place to have dinner! LOL. I’ll have to post over there soon.

Pamela – WELCOME!!! I love this thread and we are glad to have you here in our happy little running home, where absolutely no caddiness exists! Nuttin’ but kindess, inspiration and knowledge…well, we like to have fun too! Did I say I love this thread? When I started out running, Claire Kowalchik’s book was my running bible. But it sounds like you are doing everything right to run a fabulous first 5K. Then you better look out, cuz you’ll probably be bitten by the running bug; just ask Karen!...lol

Judy – Hi judy! You’re right up there with Mattea on my “hill killer girls” list!! Good job on the hills… I need a better attitude about hills! I’ve think I’ve already said that once or twice! Lol

Shelly – I love bootcamp…something about it is really cool. And thank you for the compliment, but yes, my life is often described as hectic…chaotic..crazy…nuts…yep, that’s it. LOL I’m laughing because my DH often says I bring it on myself by putting too much to do on my plate. In all honesty, he’s right on that one! LOL But at least I’m not lazy!

Mattea – Oh great, so now you’re not only going to be on the “hill killer girls” list, but now you’ll be on the “ultramax step killer girls” list! Sheesh! }( Just kidding! You ROCK with your workouts!!!

Christine! - are you kidding? YOU are going to probably run me over in that half!! Lol Good job with your runs, Christine, your progress is really impressive! Love the story about your dog and his running “progress” too!

Sarah – Hey! I posted a “You are a bad @ss runner excellent job” kudos for you in the main check in, but since you are here, let me say again that you totally rock, your marathon performance was truly outstanding and I just know you will BQ in your Fall marathon! GO GIRL!! Oh, and I think we need to consider renaming our running thread to the “Running cardio loving check-in!! :p lol

Elaine – and again to you in case you didn’t see my post, CONGRATS on getting into St. George! Beautiful scenery! Oh, and I think everyone here can’t wait until the unveiling of the “Elaine’s Official St. George Marathon Training Plan”.

Kristi – I’m so sorry to hear about your injury; I can empathize with you there. Please take care of yourself and get better. Please don’t go MIA, you can still hang out here with us. Also, have you gone to the MD about this? You may have plantar fasciitis.

Have a good rest of the day all!

hello ladies,

carole my brother and sister in law have been running a yr longer than me but have been racing the same amount of time. I guess she is going for time ,wanting to beat all us ,that is how she is, she cant stand having any of us finishing with her or before her. she drives me crazy with the attitude that she has to be best. oh well, that is why she doesnt have many friends.

karen running in the mornings really gets me in a good mood. I ended up running another 2 miles this evening since it was so nice out.

thanks for the advice on the tapering before the marathon everyone.
sarah your right, i will listen to my body. I ran 14 miles last weekend and felt great. I could have kept going but I made myself slow down about 30sec slower than the huron half that I ran.

what do you guys think of that race time predictor on runnersworld. according to my last 5k time it says I can finish the half in 2hrs exactly. I dont know if I am able to though. I would love to but I am not sure that I can . anyway, I finish when I finish but just wondered what you all thought about its predictions.

I followed a combination of hal higdon andjeff galloway training program this time and like it much better than runners world. Someone had asked what training programs people followed. I can remember who asked or said what either, I dont know how you ladies remember all that. gotta go, have a nice evening!

Thanks so much for the warm welcome. :) I'm looking forward to getting to know all of you, and also to learn from you.

Take care,
Pamela

Tomasina- Let me know how you like Bryan tomorrow. I have the Power Yoga series but not that one that you mentioned. I'm going to have to go over there and check it out.

Laura- I have to go check out Jeff Galloway. I have no clue who he is. He must be awesome because I have heard him mentioned a few times in this forum. Off to go check it out.

Karen - How do you like the Power Yoga series? Well since you, Elaine, Carole and Sarah use his workouts, he must be good! :p

Some people (runners) don't like the Jeff Galloway approach because I think he does a mix of run for some odd minutes and then BEEP, it's time to walk for some odd minutes. I know it can be frustrating for some (like I think Elaine posted about their friend's Big Sur experience) to be running in a race and then all of a sudden a pack of runners suddenly come to what seems an almost stop right in front of you when their watches beep. Personally, I wouldn't want to use the Galloway method because I think it is harder to get started back to a run after too long of a walking break. But, I guess it is personal preference.

ETA: I've used Hal Higdon's plans and they are pretty good, but I just modified to suit my schedule, etc.

Thomasina

Pamela - this is a WONDERFUL group and yes, believe it or not in a forum filled with fairly competitive women, there is no cattiness. I love it! The advice the experts will give is invaluable, believe me!

Thomasina - I know what you mean about having a rough time losing weight! I'm built more like a Clydesdale then a thoroughbred anyway, so the extra 15/20 pounds doesn't help. But hey Clydesdales can trot all day, so that's me... out there trotting along. :p I'd be honored to have you trot along with me. I plan to enjoy this one. My only real goal is to finish. I don't care how fast. I'll work on speed for my next ones. But this one is for me. To prove to myself that I can run that far. 13.1 miles - never ran that far. I know I can walk it. I climbed (hiked - nothing technical about Whitney) Mount Whitney in a day. 22 miles - 6500 vertical feet - 15 hours. But to run it will be absolutely incredible to me.

Oh - and I wanted to thank you and Carole for mentioning your diet preferences. I'm not vegan, or even vegetarian for that matter, but I've been off meat and most dairy since Sunday and I am feeling very energetic. I'm definitely going to eat this way during the week from now on, maybe eventually, you'll have another convert on your hands. I think the reason I have more energy is that I can eat more foods and get more nutrition for the same amount of calories and my body is rejoicing! Anyway, I digress as usual...

Waves hello to everyone again!

Gayle - glad you're feeling better!

Kristi - I hope your heel feels better soon!

Good to know Thomasina. I just got back from looking over at the web page and I think I will take Hal's and Runner's World approach plus do a lot of reading.

I really love the Power Yoga series. I have done all three and they progressively get harder. The last one I think it's Sweat was one I had to work up to. The other two I do regularly but the Sweat one I do maybe once every two months just to see if I still can. I'm always sore after it. It took me a while to balance on my head but once you find your center point and how to hold it then it's like you always knew where it was. I can't do a headstand but I can at least balance on my head with my knees on my shoulders. Defienlty get them.

Karen - Thanks for the info on Bryan Kest, I'm sure that after I do the one I have, I'll be ordering his other series. I'm hoping the power yoga is going to help save me from any injuries during my training for the half. I'm definitely going at this training schedule with a slow and steady attitude, because I don't want to be sidelined again. I'll let you know how I like the weight loss one.

Christine, Christine, Christine - I'm almost positive you are NOT a Clydesdale! But your post sure had me LOL'ing here at work! Never fear, you are going to totally amaze yourself when you run this half in July, because your training sounds like it is progessing very nicely. Oh, and for the record, I'm *technically* a vegetarian, not vegan, because i have occasional slip ups with chchccchhceeeese! Not very often and reduced fat kind, but still.... I try to eat very vegan though because my body functions best when I am eating clean, whole and non animal foods.

OOps, better get out of here now, have to pick up DD at guitar and then DS has open house at school tonight!! YEEHAW! Check-in with ya'll later!

Thomasina

as far as jeff galloway suggesting walking, I dont do that. I just like that he has you training for 17weeks where as alot other programs go 12weeks. He also has you once you get into the higher mileage up it every two weeks not to burn yourself out. But the extra weeks training has helped me alot. So I kind of mixed hals and his to my own liking. you can sub and change any program to work for you, that is the great thing about running. anyway hope everyone has a great night!
