Runners: Blisters?

I wore my new sneakers today for my racewalk/jog--same brand and style that I've used for a while now. Wound up with a blister on the side of my heel, though I was also wearing padded (ThorLo) socks. Anyone have any suggestions on how I should continue breaking in the sneakers? I actually haven't gotten a blister from new sneakers before!

Thanks!

I get blisters on the sides of my toes in Summer. I just use lots of petroleum jelly when the first blister arrives and the problem is gone. In Winter I have no problems with blisters at all.

I can also get these special "band aids" for blisters. They're kind of thick and cushioning and you have to leave them on till they come off by themselves. They only come in big sizes overhere, so those were no good for my little toes.

Thanks--I've seen those blister bandaids before, so I guess I will try them out. I'm wondering if it's a problem with the shoes--if I should return them and try a different style? (I only used them indoors on my treadmill, so they're in good enough shape to return still.) I didn't have this trouble with this style before...

Dick's Sporting Goods sells "Body Glide". It's in a silver package that looks just like deoderant. Put that on bare feet, then put socks on.

Alternate shoes until the new ones are broken in, slowly increasing the miles on your new shoes.

I've had nasty ones on my arches, bleeding and all...still have the scars!

Ow ow ow! That's awful. Will look for Body Glide today. Is it less messy than petroleum jelly?

Body Glide is less messy than petroleum jelly. It's really cool- it's like a little thin layer of insulation between your skin and your socks/clothing/etc. Love it.

oooooooohhhhhhhh!

Thanks so much you guys!!!! I just barely got back from running and have big blisters because I haven't run all month. I've been using baby powder but was out today. I will be getting "Body Glide" before my next run. Maybe I'll actually enjoy running if I can prevent these darn blisters.

Thanks a million!

Here is the bomber blister cure if you need to run on a pretty raw blister.

You need tincture of Benzoin. Ask the pharmacist for it. It also is contained in a canker sore med called Kanka - works just as good but is more expensive.

Leave the "roof" on the blister, but pop it. Put the tincture on. Warning - this is VERY painful for a minute. While the tincture is still a little wet, put light cloth tape over it that has been cut with rounded edges. This will keep your sock from pulling it. The tape will embed into the tinture. Don't take it off until it comes off.

This is used by adventure racers, climbers, skiers.....and never fails.

The body glide is great to prevent.

Wow..just sounds painful. I got Body Glide and the blister bandaids. Thanks for the great advice, though.

My first thought about you getting blisters is "I wonder what type of socks you're wearing." It seems like if your shoes are giving you blisters that they might not be the best one for you to use. But if the shoes are good then just maybe it's the socks.

My feet are very sensitive and I have it narrowed down to one type of sock that I can wear without getting blisters. If my sock has any amount of cotton, can't wear 'em. Can't wear Thorlos either. Just one kind will do and that's Feetures.

I use Thorlos; have used them for years and years without any problems. Might just be too much too soon on the new shoes. I let my old ones go for so long that they were really giving me problems and I was probably overeager to get into the new ones.

I just never get blisters, at least not as long as I'm wearing my beloved Feetures socks. That's why I thought it might be the sock! Oh well, I hope you break those shoes in fast 'cause I don't imagine the blisters feel very good.:)

Hrm...maybe my socks are getting old! Feetures...going to look those up. Why do you like them better than Thorlo?

Well, they fit nice and snug around the arch, they're very very soft, they don't pill up at all, it's like your feel slide over them if that makes sense.

I do believe Sarah can back me up on the wonderfulness of them.

Thanks Elaine!

I've tried all kinds of shoes and socks. I love my shoes, but haven't found socks that work for me. I'll check out Feetures and Body Glide!

Thanks,

Carol F

Feetures are sooooo awesome!!!!! I love them so much!!! They have an amazing fit through the arches that just hugs and hugs!! They feel so good! That is why I prefer them over Thorlo's. Thorlo's are 2nd favorite right now.

OK, I've got to find those socks, though it seems they're only sold in one store by me. The blister bandaids and thorlos didn't work to keep my blister from hurting this morning, even though I was back in the old sneakers. I'm kind of upset--not sure how I am going to break in the new sneakers.

The goal is to prevent any rubbing. Try a regular bandage when wearing shoes...gauze with medical tape. When at home, keep them exposed so that the air can "harden" them up. I use to sleep with my feet hanging out of the blankets with the ceiling fan blowing on them to get a lot of air. Again, mine were really bad! Keeping them under constant cover will keep them warm, soft and tender. I would also do the "sugery" mentioned above.

I thought of something else that could possibly contribute to your blisters. Sometimes a shoe can change from year to year even though the style name doesn't change. I haven't had a problem with the shoe that I prefer to wear but my husband and couple of friends have had the frustration of replacing their shoes with a new pair of the same one only to find out that the shoe has been changed so much that it no longer works for them.

I hope that's not the case--it's so hard to find shoes that I like. Am going to stick to the old shoes until the blister heals, then try again, I guess. ALso, I'm going to try to take off the blister bandaid and put on a regular bandaid so that the whole thing can air out. The blister bandaids definitely don't let them air.
