Susan, that's great that you can work ahead. A midterm and a newborn do not work well together
Jen, hormones can be brutal, can't they? It's difficult, too, because you're anxious and scared and excited and overwhelmed (in addition to tired, uncomfortable, slower, etc). I remember being so overwhelmed when Ella was born; I basically shut myself off from the outside world for about 2 weeks. I know I can't do that this time! If you decide to have more kids, you'll probably find (as I have) that subsequent pregnancies have their own hardships, but, assuming your 2nd baby looks healthy, you'll be much more relaxed the next time
As for hospital bags, mine was pretty light last time. I wore the weird mesh underwear (this time I'll bring some maternity briefs leftover from last time) supplied by the hospital, and just wore the gown they had me in. I didn't want to get anything my own PJs, and I didn't care what visitors thought LOL And I never bothered to put on make-up, even though my skin was all broken out; again, too tired to care!
Other items to remember:
-socks and/or slippers that you don't care about (in case stuff gets on them)
-camera and cell phone
-water bottle and snacks (for you and DH; I also packed a 20 oz bottle of diet Coke -- didn't care if it was cold!)
-if you wear contacts, bring your glasses. I had to take my contacts out for delivery, as a precaution in case there was a problem mandating surgery.
-outfit for James to come home in
-a book (hahahaha -- this was recommended to me, but it was never touched!)
-a towel -- hospital towels are the size of hand towels!
-toilettries
-shower shoes/flip flops -- hospitals gross me out; I didn't want to touch the shower floor!
-a comfy outfit for you to come home in (most people still look about 4 months pregnant, since the uterus is swollen)
And when you're leaving, you need the infant car seat, of course!
Also, when you're leaving, ask your nurse(s) if you can have some "chucks" (the absorbant pads they put under you while you're in bed) and some of the ice packs for your underwear! My nurses also sent me home with a can of Dermaplast (to spray on your pads, to help with healing). You'll get a Sitz bath too -- woo hoo!
For home, I would also recommend (based on my own limited experience
):
-stool softener (my C-section friends used it to, so it's good no matter how you deliver)
-Tucks or Prep H premoistened pads (just in case, or you can have DH buy them afterwards)
-some easy meals for you, for after DH returns to work -- cans of low-sodium soup, protein bars (if you eat them), peanut butter, etc. I was so tired I didn't feel like cooking lunch!
-hand sanitizer for visitors to use before holding James, and to keep with your diaper changing stuff
-premoistened flushable wipes for you (like Cottonelle). I remember being so sore, and feeling like there was so much "going on down there," that I couldn't bear the idea of using regular toilet paper (how's THAT for TMI? LOL)
