road bike advice

MAYNARDSMOM

Cathlete
I am training for my first sprint triathlon in 6 weeks. I don't feel I am doing that great on the bike with my speed. I'm not sure if maybe I'm not using the right gears or possibly even my nutrition. I eat clean but maybe I need more carbs, especially pre workout.

Thanks in advance for any help. :D

There is a lot of info I could give you but my first suggestion would be to find a local group ride and/or call your LBS to see if they have scheduled group rides. Did you get fitted for your bike? Do you know what the terrain will be like for the bike portion of your tri? Can you preride the course?

Nutrition or fueling can make or break your race. You need to get this figured out ASAP. Depending on your size/weight you will need a certain Amt of calories per hr. Try these two websites & I think you will find some good info on fueling before after & during workouts & your races. Www.hammernutrition.com and www.infinitnutrition.com

Good luck & I'll try checking back to see if you have more questions. Laina

Thanks so much Laina! I was fitted for my bike when I bought it so I'm good there. I did change my pre-ride fueling this morning & felt better about it. I rode 1/2 mile shy of my race distance & was happy with my time. I will definitely checkout the sites you mentioned.

Thanks again! :D

anytime, Tami. glad to hear you were fitted for your bike. that is very important. the reason I suggested finding a group to ride with is you can learn by watching other riders. you can pay attention to the gearing the person in front of you is using on certain terrain & also to their cadence. everyone is different, but you can get an idea. some people are spinners (faster cadence, easier gear) and others tend to be mashers (slower cadence, heavier gear). i would say for your tri depending on how you're feeling you may want to go with a higher cadence and easier gear. at least for the first half of the bike section. if you're feeling good then you can kick it up for the last half. the thing you don't want to do is blow up on the bike and then have a bad run. good luck! i admire you triathletes!!

Congrats on joining the tri community! How long have you been riding? From your comments, I'm guessing it's a fairly new activity to you. It takes time to learn your personal "sweet spot" for gearing, and for changing gears to become totally second nature. Do you have a bike computer that shows you your cadence? For most folks, somewhere in the 85-95rpm range works best. You'll slow down a bit on steep hills, but for the most part, that's a good range to shoot for. You can fine tune from there. If you are "mashing" (riding in a harder gear and pushing a slower cadence), you are overworking your legs and your run will suffer. Tri is not 3 sports back to back to back. It's one sport. You can't have a GREAT bike and a lousy run. That means you had a lousy bike. The sport is complicated and takes time (years) to really master. For your first race, concentrate on having fun and enjoying the experience, and then move on from there!

Riding with others is a great suggestion - that will likely push you a tad harder than you'd otherwise push yourself, and over time, you'll improve.

As far as nutrition goes, certainly find what works for you, but for a sprint race, nutrition isn't a consideration - it's simply too short a race. You really don't need anything at all on the course - MAYBE something mid-bike, but only if you know you need it. But find out what works for you for breakfast - you'll certainly need to fuel up solidly in the morning of the race, but with something you know will sit well.

Good luck!

Great advice again ladies thanks. Laina, I actually rode with a group that rides regularly & understand what you're saying about watching & learning as well as the pushing part. Scheduling is keeping me from catching them every week. i will be able to go with them next week so I will remember your words.
This time around I do simply want to finish. If I like it then I'll be more focused on time next year.

Thank you both again
