Richard Simmons fans?

:D O.K., don't laugh, but are there any Richard Simmons fans out there? I am not a video fan of Richard's but I do like him! I have a book of his titled "Never Give Up" and it is really interesting to read all the weight loss stories. I think it is truly amazing that Richard randomly calls his fans on the phone that are in desperate need of help! I have read that he has also sent free "Deal a Meals" to desperate individuals. I enjoy watching Richard on the informercials. He is soo energetic and bubbly and really seems to care about people!

I don't care for him myself, and I have three videos of his that I am trying to get rid of, if anyone is interested. I did use his meal planner that you slide the windows shut and once all the windows are closed you are done eating. I was doing well on it, maybe I should dig that out again.

I can't stand his workouts, but then I am not his targeted audience. I do like the man though. He seems to be so caring and compassionate. I also like his sense of humor.

I don't care for his workouts, but then I'm not his target audience. I don't mean to sound cruel, but there is nothing inspiring to me watching the people who are in his workout videos. Cathe's, on the other hand, inspire me not only because of the great shape she is in, but because of the rest of the crew, who I feel like I "know"! I watch the others as much as I watch Cathe! On the other hand, Richard has been inspiring people to get off their rear ends and MOVE for a long time. Anyone remember him on "General Hopsital" in the late 70's? I was in college the first time around, and we religiously watched that soap every afternoon! Richard played - no big surprise - an exercise instructor! The man has probably helped thousands of women, and I do admire him for that. Every time I have seen him on a segment of a talk show, or caught an infomercial, he seems very genuine, and he seems to have boundless energy and enthusiasm. He's always positive, but not in the "in your face" way Dr. Phil is now promoting his own weight loss program. (Please don't stone me, Dr. Phil fans!! LOL!! I've already been stoned on the WW message boards for NOT believing Dr. Phil is the answer to all women's weight loss problems everywhere!!) All in all, I think Richard is very sincere, but his style of workouts would never be anything I could do day in and day out. I did have one of those food thingys once upon a time, and it's not much different than the WW points system, really. Sensible, healthy choices, and portion control are the keys to "dieting". I do like it that he emphasizes there are TWO components to successful weight maintenance though - eating right AND exercise.

Richard Simmons was probably the first person / ality to treat fat women like human beings rather than like pariahs, or indeed like the untouchable invisible. For that alone he deserves a lifelong medal of honor. His workouts probably don't "work" for those who have gone beyond the beginning stages, but there are vast numbers of women and men alike who are in the beginning stages and can benefit from his productions.

I also remember him from the late '70's, when I was a high-school junior and senior fighting a silent battle with bulemia and significant overfat. He always was someone I wanted to meet.

Ah, the workouts at the famous disco!
Remember Beverly, the overweight girl who was always getting weighed in.
I have no idea why I remember that....

I have not watched a soap in years, but those were the golden days of that show, if you ask me.

Yes! The disco!! Those were the best years of that show. The Luke and Laura days!!!

>me, Dr. Phil fans!!

Dr. Phil got blasted in the latest issue of Oxygen...I loved it. The very short article said exactly what I was thinking about Dr Phil and his 'Get Real' mantra.

I think I remember when I was like 5 and wathcing t.v. in the morning, doing his workouts when they where on t.v. I don't know why at the age of 5 I wanted to exersize with those people, but I did. Not more than once or twice though. I have always been fascinated with fitness I guess. Because I remember doing Kathy Smith with a friend when I was in elementary school, like third or fourth grade? It was her mothers.
I personally think that Richard Simmons is a great person for what he does and has done for so many people. He really seems to care about all the people that he helps too.
Oh, by the way, Carol. I just wanted to add that I agree totally with you on the Dr. Phil thing!

>Which issue/month? I have that magazine but don't see and
>article on Dr.Phil latest gig.

I guess calling it an article was too generous. It was actually just a side note on one of the pages along with a little picture of him. It just came in the mail two days ago so it is the latest issue. Unless I'm getting my mags mixed up...I subscribe to seven of them.

DeeDee, im so with you on the Dr Phil front. God, what is it with that man? His weight loss bars??? Have you seen what they include! Sugar, Sugar, Sugar!!! And to be honest (please, don't hate me for saying this but ... ) he doesn't to me look like he follows his own program...i wouldn't take nutritional advice from someone that didnt look in great shape (however that is not to say that he/she doesn't know what they're talking about). In my opinion ... you really have to walk the walk and talk the talk...

OMG THANK YOU! I thought I was the only woman on the planet who didn't hail Dr. Phil as the answer to all evils - LOL! Some co-workers of mine went to see him last week when he was in Cleveland to speak (I live near Cleveland OH), and they came to work the next morning full of praises. I was coming off a night shift and naturally bit*chy anyway ... }( and I asked if he talked about his weight loss program. That's all I asked, but I suppose there was that TONE in my voice, you know ... and they jumped all over me!! They said just because I had had success with Weight Watchers didn't mean it worked for EVERYONE, and Dr. Phil knew what he was talking about when it came to weight loss. Well ... I should have given it up, but the Scorpio in me came out, and I asked how much weight Dr. Phil had actually lost on his own program. You would have thought I said the man was the devil incarnate. It's funny now, but at the time it was as if I was committing mortal sin right in front of their eyes. Hey, if he wants to jump on the weight loss book/program/foods bandwagon, go for it. But I prefer people who live what they preach, you know? As for WW, it's a time-tested and proven successful program, so only time will tell with Dr. Phil's program. That's one of the things I so admire about Cathe. She LIVES what she teaches. She's a living, breathing example of good health and fitness!!

YES!!!!! (That was me, high-fiving you!!) You just said what I didn't have the nerve to say. The man hardly LOOKS like he follows a weight loss program!!

Carol...you rock! I so agree with what you're saying. Actually i said something long those lines a while back and i got "told off" by some people. Sigh...why is that? Hey, i'm not being mean or nasty, but lets get real here...if you say "hey, follow my weight loss program" you should at least follow you're own, right? Have you ever seen Dr Beary Sears (ie - The Zone) or Dr Dean Ornish??? They don't follow the progam of that i'm sure. Mr Sears himself said he doesn't even follow his own program! How is that for motiviation! Now the Book Body Rx by Dr Connelly (notice how they are all Doctors! lol) said something really good. He said he onced asked all the so called diet gurus out there to a live diet debate but the only thing they could wear was a bathing suit. Guess how many took him up? NONE! lol ... that speaks volume. I remember sitting listening to Dr Phil on Oprah and he was telling some woman off for eating this and eating that, and i thought" wait a minute, who are you to tell her not to eat the choc icecream...look like you eat a bit yourself"...sigh. Weight Watchers has worked for many many people, and will continue to work. I wonder if in 5 years Dr Phil can say the same? Perhaps he'll expose his sixpack? Cathe walks the walk...and i admire that.

AMEN!! I've never been the type of woman to buy self-help books or listen to the newest "guru" of anything. What impresses me is people who live what they preach. When Dr. Phil first wrote the book, everyone on the WW message boards hailed it as though it was the answer to all their prayers. I didn't see him on Oprah, but I can't watch him because the man just rubs me the wrong way. There's something phoney about his eyes that I just don't like. That's the best way I can describe it. Something in his eyes bothers me. Anyway, I posted a few things about how they should be careful not to just jump on the newest thing as a quick fix, and of course I got blasted. I don't care anymore how much I get blasted on a message board. It's only my opinion, and I'm as entitled to it as anyone else is entitled to theirs. But then when I started seeing Dr. Phil's face popping up on the Internet and everywhere, promoting his weight loss program along with the book, I thought A-HA! Maybe it's not just about "helping people"? I don't like "celebrities" who use their position and power to exploit people. Like you, I've checked out what's in that "diet" food of his. I'll stick with veggies and water and lean protein and low glycemic carbs, thank you very much. This is only my humble opinion of course, but he's in this for the money. He's jumping on the bandwagon and is using his show and his national exposure to make money. He doesn't walk the walk, like so many others you've mentioned, and more. Cathe walks the walk, along with talking the talk, and THAT impresses me. She lives what she teaches, and she doesn't use her fame to exploit people. I can't imagine she ever would!

At first I thought 'Hey, he is trying to help people lose fat and gain a healthier lifestyle and the fact that he could stand to lose some pounds himself may make him less intimidating.' But then like you, I saw the bars and powders and stuff; I mean come on, it just comes down to eating less calories than they are currently eating and burning more calories than they are currently burning. I mean hey, if I'm going to have a sugar bar I would rather have a Snickers than a dressed up 'supposedly nutrtition' bar because they are cheaper!:p His hard nosed 'in your face' approach really bugs me too...to me his patients aren't the only ones who need to 'Get real'.
