Return P90X?

NY25

So, I know there are a lot of Xers here, so - I really want the STS series. Actually, I'm getting it regardless. But, I recently started P90X and I'm just not sure - I'm thinking of returning it. I agree about the legs and Kenpo workouts being easy. I'm very ambivalent about these workouts. Seems like STS will be at least as good (probably better), and I doubt that I need both STS and P90X. Or do I? What do you that have done P90X think? Keep it? Why or why not? I'm interested in your opinions (unless you're ruserious, who we've already heard from). Please share.

I also have P90X however I got it for my birthday so I will be using the weight workouts which did give me more definition in my arms I will also still use the plyometrics and yoga and the abs. I think that STS will surpass the X as far as quality of workouts so while I may not need both I didn't pay for the X. I think you could probably use both, maybe when you are done with STS you could create your own rotation with the X which is what I may do because I was not enjoying the rotations as prescribed.
Anyway, if you feel bad about having both then I would say return the X but if think you may use both then keep it!
good luck

This is a hard question to answer, without anyone having done STS. I've done P90X twice, and am really pleased with the results. Having gone through a periodization training program like this, I'm completely on board and excited about STS. I can't go back to haphazard lifting like I used to do. So, for me, STS is the perfect next step. I have no desire to do a third round of P90X (boredom factor), so I'm thrilled STS is coming soon, to keep me going in this direction. And I'll take a Cathe workout over anyone else's, any day!

Think of it this way: we aren't likely to see STS in our hands within the next 90 days. So, if you want a taste of this kind of training, give it a go. If there's parts of it that you don't like, plenty of Xers would be happy to give you ideas on how to change it up to suit you better.

Fisrt off, I think STS is going to be entirely different from P90X. The ONLY similarity I see between the two is that there's a long, set rotation to follow. So I wouldn't make the judgment as "one or the other, but not both".

While there were a few workouts in the P90X series that I wasn't keen on (KenpoX and CardoX) because they just weren't hard enough, I did feel that the rest were keepers. I also dig Tony's goofy personality and references to "Forest Gump". :p

I know a lot of people don't think "Legs & Back" in enough leg work. I started modifying it such that I omitted the back segments and substituted a heavy leg exercise in their place. Something like deadlifts or heavy squats that hits the glutes hard. That mod made it a big difference in the workout for me...put it in the "keeper" category.

I have P90X. It did wonders for me.

I'm now doing P90X+ and expect it will also do wonders for me.

I've pre-ordered STS and have no doubt that it will be a killer program as well.

IMO you should not return P90X simply based on the fact that you are getting STS.

P90X is a great program and worth it's weight in gold IMO. When I did it I added a leg work out and a cardio work out. The legs because I too thought it was light on legs and the cardio because I am a runner and didn't want to stop running for 3 months. Don't be afraid to tweak it to make it suit you. I did and got fab results!

I personally prefer variety in my work out collection. Having the X's in addition to my Cathes and other instructors keeps me going. No offense to Cathe as I love her work outs dearly but if I did ONLY her work outs day in and day out I'd go bonkers. There's no reason why you can't have the X AND STS in your collection. They are different programs that will yield different results. Change/variety is a good thing.:)

I knew I could count on you guys! I tell myself the legs is worth it because legs is where I'm weaker anyway - so the variety of leg workout style is kind of nice. Cathe scares me in the legs department. I do like the fact that P90X requires a hell of a lot less equipment. I live in a one bedroom apartment, so it mean pulling everything out and then putting it away, so that's a lot less work. I haven't viewed the Core Synergistics yet, so.... I will probably ultimately keep it - but it's great to get everyone's feedback. I suppose if I continue to be ambivalent, I can sell it to someone, somewhere. Or pass it along to a family member or something. Hmm. (I will say that I did 106 [imperfect] push-ups with it this weekend!! Amazing) Thanks for the feedback - keep it coming.

Core Synergistics rocks! It's a toughie, but in a good way. My husband even tried it and liked it. :)

Yay on the pushups!!

I really like the Core Synergistics and Ab Ripper X.

I keep hoping DH will make good on his threats to start working out and use the P90X series.

Well, I'm still plugging away at this - I'm on week three right now. And I'm increasing my pushups each week, which is cool (even though I still do them all from my knees). I still have this week and probably next before I have to decide. I'll likely keep it - the money's already gone so what's the difference, right?

I like the P90X series because of the fact that the weight work is straight to the point and you could roll out of bed have your coffee and work out in your sweats and T-shirt kind of thing. No dancing around or having to worry about low ends. I enjoy the option of doing a certain rep range as well. I like the competetive aspect too ex. the shoulders and arms routine at the end...triceps was what they were working out? I found that amusing. All in all it's a fun tough gym style routine.

That being said, I think the cardio portions are weak...except for the plyo. But if you consider the rotation, you'd agree that the two cardios are appropriate for balance. The leg routine though can't compare to Cathe's. I like PS legs and Slow and Heavy Legs a lot better than P90X leg workout.

It would have been perfect if they offered alternatives to pull ups other than the bands.

P90X did a very good job at delivering a routine that's well produced and nicely packaged.

Definitely better than what you usually come across as far as shopping network workouts.

Hi,

I'm just finishing my second round of the X and I think if you are serious about gaining lean upper body muscle, you would be foolish to send it back. I see such gains when I complete the program. My husband was watching the infomercial today and he didn't realize that's what my son and I have been doing. (Yes, we do live in the same house.) He had just commented on how muscular I look. My son, who is 18, has made tremendous gains. He's doing it exactly as produced, and I did too my first time. He was doing sets of 30 pull ups yesterday.

It's not easy though and you have to have perseverance and dedication to stick with it and make gains. It's really a mindset of yes I can do one more. I'm having to eat much more than I usually do to have the energy to push myself.

I don't like the leg or cardio portion, and have subbed some more appropriate workouts this time. I do a lot of yoga.

I think p90x has a place in your repertoire of workouts if you are serious about lifting, but I was able to maintain my original gains using Cathe's strength training routines and I can't wait to get back to them.

Here are my thoughts. I was totally pumped about P90X. I thought it was going to be great. I did a round and finished but barely. I got bored with it. Mostly because I didn't like the cardio options and I love things like step and kickboxing. I found Tony pretty boring (even though I can admit that they are excellent workouts). I just need a more upbeat environment! :)

All that said, I think it's an awesome workout and you can get great results if you will work well with Tony!

Good luck!

> I just need a more upbeat
>environment! :)

Funny you should mention environment...I find Tony's gym itself to be depressing. It's so dark and has some sort of wierd negative affect on me. I know that's a petty complaint but it turns me off of the workouts.

Same here too. Somehow the setup gets me down. I don't know how to explain it but everytime I took the dvds out and put it on, I would take it out again. It just does not draw me to want to workout with it. I was just thinking to myself that the whole setup is so depressing.

I actually like Tony's gym. It reminds me of the gyms I used to train in for Tae Kwon Do and Krav Maga. But, I can definitely see why others would not like it. It's very much a "guy's" atmosphere.
