Internet Security virus and two trojans
I had been receiving the warnings too and thought that my Norton was protecting me...wrong! I picked up a virus called Internet Security that disabled a lot of applications including task manager. A full system scan in safe mode found two trojans but not the virus. I rarely keep application shortcuts on my desktop so when one for Internet security appeared I was pretty certain this was the culprit. If you have the same problems, here is how to fix it:
1. Boot your computer into safe mode
a. Reboot your machine and continuously press the F3 button
b. Windows 7 users will reach a screen that says to press F8 for more options. Press F8 and choose the option to start Windows in safe mode
c. Systems with versions older than Win 7 should receive an option to start in safe mode.
2. Run a full system virus scan. This is important to remove the trojans that allowed the virus to enter into your system.
3. Remove the isecurity.exe file that is located in your App data folder. The app data folder is usually a hidden folder so if your explorer settings are set to the default settings you will not be able to see it unless you change the options to view hidden folders and files. Open the following folder C:\Users\<your user name>\AppData\Roaming. On my computer it was C:\Users\Stacie\AppData\Roaming. Remove the isecurity.exe file.
4. Navigate to C:\windows\prefetch and remove the ISECURITY.EXE-1824C86D.pf file.
5. There are two registry keys that should be removed as well. However, I don't recommend messing with the registry unless you really know what you are doing.
I followed the manual steps in this article:
Remove/Get Rid of Internet Security 2012 Virus Removal-How To Guide | How to Virus Removal
There are some links to virus removal tools in the link. I don't recommend clicking on them because more than likely it will take you to site to download something else on your system and you should never do that unless you are positive the source can be trusted (which is why I only did the manual steps).
I hope this help as I am an IT nerd by day and Cathelete by night.
P.S. Don't blame Cathe for the infection....one of two things probably happened. Her site was either attacked / infiltrated or a user (like a forum poster) uploaded a file without knowing it was infected with some nastiness.
