Remembering Les Paul

I just heard this on the news. Now this man is a real legend! My dad was a huge fan and I grew up listening to Les Paul and Chet Atkins records. I love their music to this day.

I was fortunate enough to watch him throw out a first pitch at Miller Park here in Milwaukee - and it is sad that many are not familiar with his contributions to the music industry. He had a good run.

Funny Les Paul story....

About 15 years ago or so, I was teaching my 8th Grade Guitar class. One of my students asked if I had ever heard of Les Paul and I said of course! He said he was going to see him that evening with his dad at a club in NYC. I said that's impossible because he is no longer alive. (I SWEAR I remember reading an article about his passing in the New York Times previously-a whole article about him and his impact on the development of the electric guitar.) I said you must be going to see his band or something. The student insisted.

The next class, the student came in with a program from the show. It was signed:

Hi Miss Pushlar,
I'm not dead.
-Les Paul

I will NEVER get rid of that program!!!

Oh, man! I've been so busy at work that I hadn't heard this. Talk about someone who changed music forever...would there even have been rock and roll without his innovation? RIP Mr. Paul.

there would be no great music without him. gotta hail the man responsible for the great(and sometimes not so great) eclectic mix of what his idea brought us.

RIP, Les Paul!

The guy was a true genius - what an innovator! I'm old enough to remember when he did the recordings with Mary Ford. If you ever get the chance, there was a program about him on PBS - I think you can order it on DVD - it's a must-see. Adding to say you can order it here: http://www.deepdiscount.com/viewproduct.htm?productId=17762624

Late last year, a guy I work with got to see him at that club in NYC where he played on Mondays.

What a cool story!! It also makes me happy to see many of the younger set digging the old school stuff. My seventeen year old niece plays guitar and just loves Led Zeppelin, Rick Derringer, Jimi Hendrix, and Jeff Beck. I was thrilled to know she knows who Les Paul is.

I will definitely be checking into the PBS documentary as well.
