Remedies/products for super dry hair?

My hair lately seems extremely dry, I use really good shampoos/conditioner for dry hair, a leave in conditioner every day, and heat protector styling products. I probably wash and style it about 4 times per week. A couple times a month, I'll use a curling iron or flat iron, but mostly I just dry it with a hair dryer on medium heat. Our water here is terrible, very hard, we have a softener, but sometimes I think that me just as bad on my hair.

Does anyone have any product suggestions or remedies to rejuvenate my hair?

I'd be interested, too! I don't use any styling tools on my hair, i.e., hair dryers, etc. I dry naturally, don't perm, don't color and my hair is still very, very dry! A friend told me to use a hot oil treatment. I haven't done that yet, but am going to try to remember to at least buy one this weekend! It will probably take 2 as my hair is very long! I'll let you know how that works!

I use Pureology, but many ladies I know use Neem oil, they rub it in somehow, put a bandana on or a hat, then exercise or sauna or clean house - or something for an hour or so, then wash out.

My hair is long - so I am a bit chicken - I could be in the shower for a veeerrrryyy long time. lol.

I have super straight, . . . thin, coarse, asian hair. I love Ojon products but they are expensive and my husband hates the smell. I used to also use coconut oil.

Hi,

I just wanted to offer some suggestions for dry hair issues. I think there are a couple culprits involved with dry hair. 1- being diet. Hair is nourished below the skin via the blood, so what ever your eating does effect your hair. So, maybe try adding a good mulitple vitamin andOmega 3 supplements to your diet or just more salmon to your diet is one part of the solution. 2-I'd recommend using a protein pack twice a month and add some vitamin E to the protein pack. Use vitamin E capsules (1 or 3 depending on length of hair) and break them open and add the liquid to the protein pack and mix it together. Then apply to your dampened hair, comb thru to the ends, I use a plastic grocery bag to cover my hair and by doing that your are using your trapped body heat to allow the conditioning effects of the Protein/vitamin E mixture to really penetrate. Then, just rinse well, and shampoo with a mild shampoo. I'd also recommend using a shampoo for dry hair and to not shampoo everyday.

Ok, that's my suggestions. I was a professional hairstylist for many years and learned a lot of things about taking care of hair. I hope this info helps.

Hugs!;)

I used pureology for quite a while, and come to think of it my hair was good, ok time to buy that again! I've heard about Ojon, I tried a sample pack of something once, but that wasn't enough to know for sure if I like it. Thanks for the Vitamin E suggestion, I'm going to give it a shot. I was thinking about my diet, I have been eating something with olive oil almost daily, but I have to give it some thought if there has been enough healthy fats overall.

Thanks, and keep em coming! I'm a product junky anyway, so love to try new stuff.

I had very dry hair after a bad color job. One thing that worked, and was inexpensive was Pantene hair mask. It is a deep conditioner and you leave it on for two to five minutes (or more). I used a lot of it, made sure all my hair was covered and kept it on for ten minutes. It did work well. Of course, a few days later i had to do it again. you can use it everyday if need be. It was not expensive either.

good luck,

I have too have dry hair, which is curly. My scalp tends to get flaky as well. The best thing that I have found to control the dryness of my hair and scalp is to not wash with shampoo, but rather with conditioner. I scrub my scalp with it and work some through my hair. I like Giovanni's Organic Triple Tea Treat or Smooth As Silk, which I find at a local health food store. You might think that using just conditioner doesn't get my hair and scalp clean, but it does! When the feeling that I should *wash* my hair creeps up on me and I use even a gentle shampoo, I regret it for a day or two because my hair is dry and frizzy again.

No-poo!

I have super dry hair and the solution I've found is to stop using shampoo, which is very drying. My hair still gets clean but isn't completely stripped.

There are lots of ways to do this. I use conditioner without silicone (which is not water soluble and will build-up without shampoo). Suave Naturals and most "natural" marketed conditioners don't have silicone (dimethicone is most common, but anything ending in -cone is a prob a culprit).

Depending on how dirty your hair is, you can "shampoo" with conditioner, rinse then condition again with the same or thicker conditioner. Or just do it all at once.

There are also commercial "no-poos" that use more gentle cleaners to avoid stripping hair of moisture.

The website Naturally Curly has tons of information because curly hair tends to be very dry. Here is a the forum on going shampoo-less - http://www.naturallycurly.com/curltalk/forumdisplay.php?f=28 (also try Googline "no-poo"). There are also TONS of recipes and product reviews for deep conditioning and leave-ins. Those ladies have tried it all!

I also have been using the no-poo for a year and a half with great result. I use baking soda (2 tbls in a large cup of water) work it in your hair leave in while you shower and rinse well. I follow with vinegar rinse (1 tbls in a large cup of water). Sometimes I use sopanuts (its a nut that grows on tree that contians natural soap) Ocassionally I apply coconut oil before washing. My hair has never been better. I used to have very dry hair and even the natural shampoos were too drying.
It did take me a few weeks for my hair to get used to this new solution and I had to tweek the proportion of baking soda. I don't think I will ever go back to the regular shampoos.

i had dry itchy hair for a long time til i bought Neutrogena Tripple Moisture shampoo and conditioner. now my hair is very soft,no itching.forget about the expensive stuff.this is the best!

Thanks for all the suggestions, I also have the Wen cleansing conditioner, which is used alone with no shampoo. I was out shopping today, and bought the Fekkai Rx Protein repair shampoo, conditioner, and a daily spray, I also bought the Intense hydrating mask by Phyto, it was 75% off, originally $38 so thought it's worth a shot. I'm hoping this shampoo which claims to repair vs. just moisturize will help. I'll post my results back in a few weeks if I see any improvements.

The biggest culprit is over-washing. One option is to wet hair, work in conditioner, don't rinse, then use a sulfate-free shampoo, rinse, and condition again.

Also, using medium heat on your blowdryer may be making things worse because then you are drying your hair longer than if you just did it on high heat. I suggest getting a professional ionic blowdryer. The Bio-Ionic is my favorite. Getting a haircut which allows you to get rid of the blowdryer may also help.

Nice site! Thanks for sharing - my hair is naturally curly and dry and I heard about the no-poo approach but wondered if it would really work. My hair doesn't really get dirty - unless I am gardening for 8 hours :), so I think I will give this a try.

no-poo

wow. i used that years ago when devachan first came out with the product. it takes some getting used to, but my hair was much healthier after using it. i think they also came out with lo-poo for those who thought the no-poo was too heavy.

Curly Girl here too!

Deva came out w/low-poo b/c people just could not get used to no lather w/their shampoo.

The biggest culprit in shampoo is sulfates. I only shampoo 1-2 times a week, but I condition every day.

Silicone products aren't good b/c they coat the hair. While this is a good thing temporarily b/c it will protect the hair, you have to clarify frequently, which means sulfates.

So look for sulfate-free, silicone-free products.

I also deep condition once a week with a heat cap. Usually some kind of protein based conditioner, for about 20-30 minutes.

I also take some supplements--biotin & omega 3 to help w/hair growth & hair strength.

On a side note, you cannot repair damaged hair. Your hair is dead pretty much as soon as it grows out from your scalp. That said, you should get the damage trimmed off, otherwise it'll travel up your hair shaft & make it even worse.

I need a hair cut maybe 1-2 times a year. My last trim was in January. No split ends yet. :)

ETA: I strongly recommend you step away from the curling iron, thank it for its service & then put it in your electronics recycling bin.

Thank you for asking

Thanks for asking about this and those of you who have shared your tips and tricks. I learned a lot. I'll have to take a look at that link mentioned above. I have very dry frizzy curly hair and it's been getting worse. I do fairly good with my fatty Omega intake and it doen't seem to help much.

I only shampoo about 3 times a week, but I'll have to look into the no-poos and baking soda tricks and rethink my conditioner. Thanks again everyone!

I have curly, coarse hair as well. It got worse after menopause. I only wash my hair every 2-3 days. I've tried Ojon (with some success but my son complains about the smell.) and sulfite/sulfate/paraben free shampoo. What seems to help the most is I changed to Carol's Daughter shampoo (tui I think). It's a line designed for African American women. Even though I'm not African American it seems to work well with my curly coarse hair.

As an aside I always wanted to have shiny, straight hair. So I tried the Brazilian Blowout offered by my stylist. It's a temporary 'straightener' that seems to work by super conditioning. It sure did for me. I've never had straight, shiny, super conditioned hair before and it was fun. It lasted about 4 months (various stages) and I started to miss my curly hair ;) So I'm back to my natural less shiny but bouncy hair. :D

As I was flipping channels last night, I caught part of a 'make over' show, where one woman (African-American) had really dry hair, and it was rehydrated using olive oil. They also said to only wash the hair once a week (I don't wash every day, but once a week seemed like a bit to infrequent to me. Better: "don't wash your hair every day." On 'non-wash' days, you could wet the hair, run through some conditioner, then rinse.)
