Recovery "Week"

NY25

Cathlete
So, I'm on my recovery week. I'm having "issues." I did my last Meso 1 workout on Saturday. Sunday I "rested" by cleaning the house. Yesterday, I did some errands and had to climb up and down the subway several times so did let's say about 10 minutes of stair stepping. I got home and suddenly my legs, paticularly my hamstrings, started to really hurt (up until then, no DOMS). Today, my legs are even more sore - in a weird, atypical way. Nothing major, but definitely sore, like muscle fatigue/pain from the flu or something, and I am EXHAUSTED. I really feel like I should do cardio or something, but all I want to do is sleep. Tomorrow night I have errands also, so nothing will be happening there but walking around the city.
I'm starting Meso 2 on Thursday, no matter what!! So, is four days of actual nothing okay? I really don't see getting any cardio out tonight. I'm going to try to do abs and stretching, but I'm almost too tired for even that. I feel awful about it - mentally. (I guess that's both a good and bad thing). argh

How about you?

I would really just rest if that's what your body is telling you to do. Last thing you need to do is get an injury.

yes...

Yes, your body will need the rest, and obviously it's telling you that it needs it, so listen to your body. I am a yoga instructor so I am a big promoter of listening to your body. If it is fatigued and sore then it's definately a great time for leisurely activities and possibly even elevating your legs at night while reclining. Another thing you might try is some gently yoga stretching or just some gentle stretches that you like to do, and make sure you breathe while you stretch so your muscles get the oxygen they need. No worries on losing strength or muscle gains after just 4 days. Recovery week is necessary in order for adaptations in the muscle to take place. The body actually needs rest in order to grow, and it takes about two weeks of rest before you actually start to lose muscle gains. Your doing a-ok!

Is there a reason you feel you have to start the next mesocycle on Thursday? It seems that this program is very well thought out and having Cathe schedule a full recovery week into it would appear that it's an important component. It certainly sounds like you need the rest and are at risk of overtraining.

Partly because I'm cuckoo and partly because I got a little sick in the middle of Meso 1, so figure that was my rest week. I've chosen Thursday, because I'm shifting my workouts from T-Th-Sat to Th-Sat-Mon to keep legs on Saturdays (the only day I can realistically do them) and keep to a good schedule I can stick with.

I guess it is only four days. I am excited that I'm getting my drive back - before I would have just blown it off and then felt guilty. Now I'm feeling guilty first. That's a good thing because it means I'm getting my rhythm and dedication back.

I'm glad to hear everyone thinks it's okay for me to go home and sleep tonight. Thanks for the support!!!

"Active" recovery?

Hi, everyone! I have a question about what "active" recovery means. I thought that it meant that we should do some cardio and light weights, just not STS. (Maybe I misunderstood this). It sounds like some of you plan to take that week off from formal exercise. Are any of you doing some cardio or light weights during active recovery week? Thanks for getting back to me on this.

recovery week

I can't remember where I read it, but I remember Cathe specifically saying NO weight work at all during active recovery week. We are taking our kids skiing for Spring Break so I plan on using skiing and yoga for an "active" recovery.

no weight wqrk quote

"ACTIVE RECOVERY WEEK…Do cardio activities, yoga workouts, stretch programs , or even totally rest but NO WEIGHT TRAINING THIS WEEK!!!"

This quote is from the STS Forum sticky entitled "STS Cardio Suggestions" and comes from Cathe.

Hope that helps everyone!

Thank you!!

I don't read a lot of the other posts b/c I'm so busy with other stuff (and I do these workouts at about 4:30 AM!!). Anyway, thanks so much for answering my question. This really helps, and I am looking forward to my light week. My body is really tired and I just feel like sleeping!

Thanks again!

I totally agree. Your body is telling you it needs rest. As I get older I listen to my body way more then I did in my younger days;) You'll feel better and stronger in the long run.

After finishing Meso 1 I realize how much that rest/recovery week is to be appreciated. I need it and I love that it is factored in and not a choice. I have been thinking of walking with Leslie, doing yoga, possibly Tracy Anderson's Mat workout or Ellen Barrett's Studio Series. No weights at all--not even light. What are you thinking of doing? Curious.

I'm planning on doing some Turbo Jam, and more Cathe step cardio. I want to get my endurance back up for cardio. Somewhere along the way I seem to have lost it. I may also take more full rest days than normal (I normally work out 6 days a week), maybe taking a rest day on Weds too.
