Recovery drinks

I started Insanity and love it. Does anyone use the recovery drink? Or anything else for that matter? Anything that encourages toning and performance would be great - as long as it actually works.

I'ved used BB's recovery drink in the past as well as protein shakes. They were never really worth it for me though. Sure they tasted good but they didn't fill me up (for very long anyway) so they were just extra calories that I didn't need. After years of wasting my $ on all that kind of stuff, I finally "let go" of it and started eating REAL FOOD after my work out instead. It's a much better option for me. That's just me though. Everyone is different. :)

Terrific!

Thank you for the honest response! Saving money is a great thing. I do want to keep things healthy and calorie controlled. So there's no magic potion to increase results and speed recovery?

I personally never saw any "magical" difference in how I felt/recovered when I used the recovery drinks/protein shakes vs now that I eat real food afterwards.

People swear by Shakeology by Beach Body but I refuse to get sucked in. Although it sounds good, again, it's a high calorie shake that I KNOW is gonna leave me feeling hungry an hour later so why bother? Sounds super nutritious but I'd rather eat the real food then drink the shake. It'll be more satisfying for me thus saving me calories. :)

ETA:: Ever notice that Cathe is one of very few in the fitness industry who has not created or promoted any kind of pill, shake or recovery drink formula? Think maybe there's a reason for that? ;)

When I did a P90x rotation, I would have a chocolate soy milk drink after each weight workout. I checked the 'recovery drink' macro nutrient balance, and the chocolate soy milk was about the same.

I tend to just eat a meal afterwards. Often its steel cut oatmeal, some nuts and a scrambled egg on the side. I used to do the protein shake afterwards and I was putting on weight (fat and muscle.)

It's 150 calories and yes, it does fill me up for hours. Cuts my sugar cravings too. :) To each their own. I'm glad you've found what works for you.

I've had 300 calorie shakes that don't fill me up for hours. It's just me. The problem is, I think, that I need to chew in order to feel satisfied. :)

In the past, I have used fatfree, lactose free milk, banana, 1 tbsp peanut butter - blended together. I was good for about 2.5 hours.

I'm not hungry after a workout so stick with water. when I get hungry in about an hour, I eat something that requires chewing, like an apple with a little PB. Liquid calories don't work for me, to echo fit_mommy. I'm trying to slowly lose weight, maybe you're not... so maybe that makes a difference.

From what I've learned from a couple of trainers, a recovery meal or drink should be consumed no later than an 1 hour after your workout to replenish the muscles. It should have a 4-1 ration of carbs to protein. The higher carbs are suppose to help replenish the glyogen lost during the workout. I have been told that chocolate milk makes a great recovery drink. I just started drinking one recently(acutally I'm drinking strawberry milk) but it is too soon to know if I have had any results yet. As for Shakeology, it is a meal replacement, not necessary a recovery drink. I love it and replace either breakfast or lunch with it, but I do not usually use it right after my work outs.
