RE: Back Muscles

Hi there Cathe! I am amazed at your back muscles! Especially at how your lats seem to be defined all thte way down into your lower back.
How did you accomplish this? I am curious as to which exercises develop those muscles. Almost looks like you have defined obliques in your back. Please tell us how!
You are such an inspiration.

Thank you Gina! I genetically have always had strong back muscles (which seemed to give me an advantage in my gymnastic days). But even though genetics play in my favor for strength, if I don't train my back with weights, it will not look defined. To get the entire sword of the lat (I believe that is the part you are asking about), I do lawn mower pulls, one arm rows, wide grip pull ups and wide grip pull downs. I really wish that there were more ways to work back with free weights and barbells so that I could give you more variety in your home exercise back programs. I am working on a way to offer this someday in the future but for now I am glad I have the resistance bands and other hand grip variations to offer some variety to home exercise (non-machine or cable assisted) back programs.

>what are lawn mower pulls? Probably a dumb question, just
>don't recall hearing that before. Thanks:)

this is the exercise done in GS back where you are doing a bent over one arm row but you slightly angle the weight in front of you just slightly when your arm is in extension. the motion is in a diagonal motion like that of pulling the string to start a lawn mower

Hi again Gina! Lawn mower pulls can be done a few ways. KarieV has told you of a way that simulates the movement holding a dumbell, however, my favorite way to do them is with a cable attachment or resistance band which is affixed to the base of a firm object. You literally pull at the cable or band in the same aggressive and quick manner you would when starting a stubborn lawn mower (just with better form and less swearing :7 )
